#Transfiguration #Sunday thoughts (this is not fully fleshed out yet):

Read all the passages for this week.

The Exodus and the two New Testament readings are all connected.

I am struck by the specific way 2 Peter affirms the Prophets in the context of the Transfiguration. The Prophets' message was "like a lamp shining in a dark place." But that message was also "until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts." (NLT rendering)

On the one hand, the Prophets are affirmed. On the other hand, there's quite a gap between "a lamp shining in a dark place" and the dawning of a new day. A lamp in the dark is necessary - and think a small flame, not a brilliant LED. The Prophets had a message inspired by God, but they did not know God as Jesus knows his Father. In Jesus the day is dawning. The light of the new day is continuous with a lamp in a dark place, but it is infinitely greater than that lamp. Both illuminate, but one allows one to safely navigate a room; the other transforms the entire waking world.

Epiphany Last, Year A

“For many, Lent is a time to recognize our sin, to recognize that we do evil and deal corruptly. But there is another message of Lent. It is the message of Isaiah, the message of Jesus. ‘[Though our] sins be like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.’ God's nature is always to have mercy.”

“This transformation, indeed, this transfiguration, from scarlet to snow, and crimson to wool, from a people utterly estranged from God, and indelibly marked by sin, to the beloved daughters and so…

so, three #prophet s walk into a mountain... #finishTheJoke #transfiguration
Matthew 17:1-9.... The actual #transfiguration narrative up on a #mountain... #lectionary
Peter's intuition was to commemorate the occasion by building three shelters... One for #Moses, one for #Elijah, and one for #Jesus ... https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2017&version=NIV

Bible Gateway passage: Matthew 17 - New International Version

The Transfiguration - After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

I'm just going to be lazy and #retoot my #lectionary analysis of Matthew 17:1-9 from a few weeks ago... But a good discussion would be what does the #Transfiguration have to do with #abram / #abraham being obedient, and why wasn't #Abe up on the #mountain with the other prophets??

What's a good hashtag for #john316 ... #forGod or #ForGodSoLoved or #ForGodSoLovedTheWorld 🤔 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

3:17 "Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%203%3A1-17&version=NIV

Bible Gateway passage: John 3:1-17 - New International Version

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus - Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.

I was going to summarize John 3:1-17 as "Jesus meets with #nicodemus to quote #John316 to him" but that would be a bit #recursive ... #inception
Two #gospel readings this week! John 3:1-17 (Jesus has a night meeting with #nicodemus and discusses what it means to be #BornAgain from #Heaven) and Matthew 17:1-9 ( Jesus and #elijah and #Moses hang at the #Transfiguration redux... we had this #pericope a couple weeks ago)
