Another Hour of Action in the books! #RVA residents took action to urge city leaders to continue increasing solar power in the city, while county residents wrote to their county supervisors urging them to oppose the merger of Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy which would result in the creation of the largest utility in the country and further increase prices on consumers. The merger is also bad news because:
- NextEra has allegedly interfered with elections in Florida, recruiting non-competitive independent “ghost” candidates with the same last names of candidates they wanted to defeat.
- NextEra attempted to coerce Jacksonville City Council member Garrett Dennis into resigning his seat in exchange for a lucrative job offer
- NextEra has a history o f inflating prices to bolster its profit margin; they spent over $60 million to elect candidates who then removed regulators critical of the company’s rate increases
- NextEra is doubling down on fossil fuels and blocking clean energy deployment, planning to build 10 gigawatts worth of gas generators in Pennsylvania and Texas in 2026.
I dislike losing power long enough to need the generator. I REALLY dislike losing power and not knowing, five hours later, when we'll have power again.
However.
I absolutely trust that Dominion Energy is doing all it can right now. I completely understand that power in Virginia is genuinely a sh*show right now (I mean, the outage map is WILD rn). And I totally get that this is a very First World kind of problem to whine about. I am also INCREDIBLY grateful that my house is keeping fairly cool in spite of the lack of power, and that since it's nighttime the temperature outside is reasonable.
So. I shall abide.
(Probably won't stop quietly whining though. I can only do so much in service of being A Good Patient Grateful Person. ) ;p
