John Calvin, early Calvinist, writes on James 1:27. He says if you would like to be seen as religious, then you should engage in benevolent self-denial for your neighbors.
Modern evangelical polity, in contrast to John and James, is the opposite. It’s about shaming those who won’t offend neighbors, or will spend far too much time talking about mercy and benevolence.
