A small swarm moved into my bait hive I had up a tree a couple of weeks ago. Got it down today and opened it up to reveal this beautifully crafted honeycomb, really calm bees and plenty of brood. I've cut this out and put the bees and all their comb in a nuc so I can move them into my apiary in a few days.
A beautiful European hornet queen (Vespa Crabro) hanging around the apiary yesterday. European hornets are native to the UK, and despite their formidable size and appearance, they are gentle giants and only get aggressive when threatened or attacked. Their nests are small, and although they like to catch a few honeybees for their lunch, they don't cause any problems or hurt the colony.

One of my jobs out there in the real world is looking after this tennis court. Its seasonal because its a grass court, and we've had lots of rain the last few weeks, so this week was my first chance to mow it, paint it, and hang the nets. It's very rewarding, and for me, a sign that spring has most definitely sprung!

Putting wood ant protection under the beehives, using containers filled with oil, and bricks to raise the stands up to effectively create a moat the ants can't cross. I've also put cinnamon down as this deters the ants, although it gets washed away by rain. These ants will decimate a hive, they eat the bees, and all the brood and honey. I'd rather not kill them though if I can protect the hives like this...
