Plastic - A Call to Action

This is a nice and succinct report about the global #plasticscrisis, some of the huge gaps in our knowledge and what to do about it.

Well done to Professors Fern Elsdon-Baker, Andy Dover, Stefan Krause and colleagues of the University of Birmingham Plastics Network!

Plastic: a call to action report - Birmingham Plastics Network

Plastic pollution poses a threat to humanity which couldbe on a similar scale to climate change. In order to combat this, we cannot continue to simply manage plastic; we must fundamentally reimagine it.

Antimicrobial resistance, or #AMR, is a massive global threat. 🦠

The third season of our podcast has just landed and it's all about AMR.

Hear from experts in public health, chemistry, #environmental science, medicine and policy making (including Professor Dame Sally Davies) explain what this is all about and what can/needs to be done.

Make sure you check out all 3 seasons - the first is on #plastics, the second one on #batteries.

And for those #plastics we can’t live without, we have to eliminate eliminate #toxic #Chemicals ( at least 10,000 chemicals are used in plastics) ⬇️

New Dr. in the house! Congrats to @[email protected] (@[email protected] @[email protected] ) on successfully defending his thesis on the #circular #bioeconomy for #plastics! A great deep-dive into the future of #plastic value chains and its #substitutes!

@luckytran I think it’s good that we normalise wearing masks when we’re sick, or living with someone who is. Long term this source control paradigm (with well fitted #bettermasks) is the most sustainable strategy for reducing transmission.
I spent the last couple of weeks considering the challenges and tension of extracting more minerals from the natural environment in order to build renewable batteries. Special thanks to @steve for helping me find Teresa Kramarz’s fascinating work. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/lithium-mine-val-dor-1.6648344
I don't want to just be posting about numbers like a clock, but the 2 million mark of monthly active users across the network is a pretty big deal. This is going big numbers! Shout out to all the server operators who are absorbing this wave.
Gaps remain but the #EU and a coalition of 100+ developing countries have reached a tentative agreement at #COP27 about a fund to help disaster-stricken nations deal with #ClimateChange consequences.
