I don't want to just be posting about numbers like a clock, but the 2 million mark of monthly active users across the network is a pretty big deal. This is going big numbers! Shout out to all the server operators who are absorbing this wave.
@Gargron all of you are doing amazing work!!
@Gargron No, thank you for your massive contribution to a better world! 👍
@Gargron
Woop woop! Hitting each milestone pretty quickly 💪shout out to getting v4 into prod 🤘
@Gargron Great to see that Mastodon is going big, now approaching more than 7 million users.

@jsamwrites More active users ...

Soon I hope.

@ParadisFraise @jsamwrites
Coming over from Twitter is a big thing. We loved that platform so much. It's only a matter of time before we will become accustomed to Mastadon. Thank you all for welcoming us!
@Gargron poste bitte so viele Zahlen, wie du möchtest. Das ist mehr als verdient! 🍾
@Gargron exciting times for the fediverse and the internet in general! Who said open source social networks can't succeed?
@Gargron Oh don't worry we love numbers! 😍
@Gargron great job to everyone!
@Gargron comparing with previous waves, the teams did an amazing job at keeping the systems responding. Well done for the 2M.
@Gargron does the overall user count affect the compute requirements of instances with less (one?) user?

@Gargron Kudos and congratulations.

I'm a bit confused with one thing, though: how does that relate to the 7 million accounts counted by @mastodonusercount ?

Is it just that there are 5 million inactive accounts, or is there more to it than that?

@jorgecandeias 7 million registered accounts. 2 mil active is like logged in and posting in the last two weeks.
@Gargron Looks like it's growing about 8K users per hour. Lots of new instances popping up too
@Gargron If there's anything we can do to support (besides putting money into various and sundry Patreon accounts), please share and boost.

@Gargron That seems like a lot! More are coming, too.

Thank you all!!

@Gargron quesos.io has handled it's single user without issue 😂
@Gargron congratulations! I hope the numbers keeps getting bigger.
@Gargron I don't have much in the way of resources but I do have a lot of time on my hands. Is there a good way to help?
@Gargron I joined this month and immediately started contributing a few dollars to my server.

@Gargron Yes, and thanks also to our server guardian @PaulaToThePeople who has been exceptional.

#Amplify
#GoodWork

@Gargron next you just need to get extra moderators, cause you folks are kinda infamous for not having enough of them
@Gargron Especially huge props for your work and starting this all, giving everyone a worthy alternative when we need it the most! Reminds me of the earlier internet days where it actually was enjoyable and not filled with ads trying to milk us all and compete for mindshare. Mastodon is social media made relaxing.
@Gargron I want to both cheer for you....and give you a cup of tea or coffee for caffeine to keep up! Wow! Congratulations!
@Gargron I can barely handle the load on my server (1 user), but I love doing it!
@gideonstar @Gargron We need more solo hosters out there. I salute 🫡 you!

@darnell @gideonstar @Gargron

Went live today with my single user instance today. Initially I will run this for myself, also to get experience with regards to load etc. Maybe will open up later for others to register.

@bergmeister @gideonstar @Gargron 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 Congrats! You also chose a cool domain name too!
@darnell @bergmeister @Gargron @gideonstar was just going to say I really like the domain name you picked.

@bergmeister @darnell @gideonstar @Gargron

I was thinking about starting my own instance also, but I was not sure who the best hosing site would be.

Who did you choose?

@demuspolitics Although I run allmost all things from my house, the decision of running Mastodon locally was not easy. I'm running it now as a single use instance just for myself, but who knows where it will end up later. Most important thing would be uptime and scaling of a future server. As the documentation shows a migration of an instance to another server is not too hard, I made the decision to start at home. Am running it in a VM on a NAS.

@bergmeister

I didn’t even think of running from my home, as I was not sure I wanted to deal with the security headache. But it’s good to know that migration is pretty straightforward.

Thanks for letting me know, as I like the idea of being in control of my own data.

@demuspolitics @bergmeister @gideonstar @Gargron Ironically also plan on starting three instances in the semi distant future based on 3 languages in Nigeria (Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo), but I am worried about hosting resources & moderation too (I also do not speak the languages).
I already purchased domains for them, but I might lean towards Google or Amazon for hosting.
@bergmeister @darnell @gideonstar @Gargron Sounds super interesting, I've vaguely thought of doing that. What kinda kit did you use? Is it hosted in your garage, or on a shared server somewhere...?
@CarbonWriter Dell OptiPlex 9020, hallway, server cabinet. Proxmox CT with Debian. Nothing too fancy.
@CarbonWriter @darnell @gideonstar
The main component of my #homelab is basically a NAS with virtual machines. I had it in my appartment, but the noise was bothering a little bit too much and moved everything to the basement. Networkcabeling was a nightmare getting to the basement, but that sweat pays off. I have a 12U 19" rack with the NAS and some additional equipment (2 Mini-PCs act like Windows Server, UPS, etc). Last addition were 2 fans to keep the temperature in the rack in check.
@CarbonWriter @darnell @gideonstar was in the basement just now and thought I'd send you a picture of the setup.
Nice cable management. You psychopath!
@gideonstar @Gargron if you don't mind the work of setting it up, the oracle free tier can give you access to a 4 core Arm instance with 24GB of RAM and 200GB of storage. It's what I'm using, and expanding the storage space seems quite manageable cost wise. Remember, that's the free tier, no cost for that. Keep frequent backups tho.
@Gargron We should have found mastodon sooner. Vitalik led me here. 🥂 to decentralized, ad-free, algorithm-free, social media platforms that promote free speech.
@Gargron I'm just a newb here but early thank you to everyone who works to make this a fun, educational, inclusive, and functional space.
@Gargron awesome work by so many people who want to make this work especially #tootcommunity who have been brilliant. Numbers are amazing 🤩
@Gargron yeah, I tipped my server. Lord knows they are going to need capacity.

@Gargron awesome and congrats! This feels like a good place to put this: https://twitter.com/rahaeli/status/1593819064161665024?t=K8JEIp6YRpGURA2UWchMDA&s=19

If you host an instance in the US, these are the extra steps you need to follow to make sure you are in compliance with US copyright law, including DMCA. Very important to protect yourself from personal liability!
