From the British Fantasy Society:

Dr Gabriel Elvery, recently awarded their PhD, provides this character sheet for the types of people who study fantasy—and what they might get out of it.

“We look forward to welcoming you to the conference tomorrow. Please upload your slides to …”

Bro, I haven’t even started yet!

I applied for a studentship at a famous university, got shortlisted, interviewed and rejected. Three years later, the people who interviewed me started publishing papers describing how they executed my project.

I applied for a post-doc fellowship at a famous university, got shortlisted, interviewed and rejected. Two years later, they are launching a conference exploring the ideas in my proposal.

The worst part is, they don't understand the ideas, so they do a shit job.

Interferometric measurement of nuclear resonant phase shift with a nanoscale Young double waveguide - Nature Photonics

A nanoscale X-ray double-waveguide interferometer is developed to measure the phase shift due to the 14.4-keV nuclear resonance of the Mössbauer isotope 57Fe. The phase shift is extracted from just a few single-photon interference measurements using Bayesian inference.

"Since the appearance of #ChatGPT ,the instructor’s job isn’t just to teach the subject and frantically attempt to keep every #student ’s plate spinning. Increasingly, it’s to moonlight as a detective and prosecutor because students without the motivation to do the work don’t have to skip it anymore. They can turn in a work-shaped simulacrum almost as easily. And a substantial number do."

To teach in the time of ChatGPT is to know pain

LLM use is the most demoralizing problem I’ve faced as a college instructor.

In a phd dissertation, you need to use the word “seminal” when referring to publications or ideas you consider important. Sorry, I do not make the rules. #academicchatter
Another PhD student passed his defense today 🤩
A postdoc’s last day in our group 😭
A student RA has to decide if he can financially afford to keep working for us for a few months before his grant decision comes in 🫠
Big feels in the ever changing precarious academic “family” #academicChatter
Our latest paper was finally published in Nature! --> https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-10356-3
We jumped on the #QuantumComputing bandwagon and demonstrated that we can do 2-qubit gates with very high fidelity in a system with cold fermionic atoms!
The special emphasis lies on the fermionic part - this could enable easier quantum simulation of other fermionic systems, like strongly correlated electrons! (That's basically everything interesting we would want to simulate)

High-fidelity collisional quantum gates with fermionic atoms - Nature

A robust composite pair-exchange gate based on controlled interactions of fermionic atoms in an optical superlattice demonstrates high fidelities and long Bell-state lifetimes, marking an important step towards a fully digital fermionic quantum computer.

Cool for other people my age that are well established enough in their industry that it doesn’t take much effort for them to leave the USA. But realistically, given how much bouncing around I’ve done in my career, I’m only able to get out of here by getting into a PhD program in Canada or the EU. Where I’m going to have to work a hundred times harder to prove myself, even though I’m coming from an AACSB school, because just being from the States is a tarnish on my CV.
