What math do neuroscientists need to know?

A highlight of #SFN2022 was Ella Batty's answer to this question. She showed off an incredible math for neuroscientists course she has developed at Harvard with open materials (https://ebatty.github.io/MathToolsforNeuroscience/) and discussed her amazing work with Neuromatch Academy (https://compneuro.neuromatch.io/)

Her SFN slides are here: https://osf.io/s94b2

If you have followed me in the last few days and I haven't followed you back, it's nothing personal, just haven't been able to keep up. I am really enjoying this platform and getting to know about all the great research happening around the world.

Today is world #KeratoconusDay. #keratoconus (KC) is an eye disease with no cure. The corneas of those with KC thin and cone out, causing visual ghosting and sensitivity to light. Eye rubbing is thought to be a contributing factor, the direction of the association is not fully understood. Many can be treated with hard contact lenses (scleral lenses), some may be caught early enough for corneal cross linking, which slows or stops the progression, others require a corneal graft. Personally, I was diagnosed late (37) and was not able to get cross linking. I was told I needed a graft but was lucky to find one of the world's leading contact lens fitters and I now get functional vision for around 10 hours a day. My advice to everyone is that if you find your sight deteriorating and glasses are not addressing the problem, and you have been going to an optometrist that does not have the equipment to check your cornea, find one that does. Often the focus is on trying to catch conditions of the retina, which is also very important.
I’m just a girl, sitting in front of a journal article, wondering why the heck they still think they need to format them in a way that saves paper. Multiple columns and teeny tiny text is not only annoying, it’s not good for #accessibility. Rant over….for now.
