Aaaaahhhhhh ! One of my favourite papers, which is about the efficient use of water by plants, has just been cited in this sentence "[...] as stress-induced flower or seed abortion is typically irreversible (Brendel, 2021[...]". There is zero information in my paper about flower or seed abortion. Such wrong citations are actually nearly more the rule than the exception now, but I get §&$%"&% every time : did they not read my paper ? Why cite it then ? Do they pick random papers, just for more citations ? Have they even read the title ?

The latest research results on stomatal dynamics from our PhD candidate (and quite proud of it :-) : the shade tolerant Fagus sylvatica , the common beech, shows more reactive stomatal responses on shade leaves than on sun leaves, suggesting an optimisation to increase CO2 uptake. The differences in stomatal dynamics were not related, as usually assumed, to differences in stomatal morphology.

I am become... a contradiction in terms #AcademicWriting #AcademicChatter
A lot of things are hard at work right now, but I'm actually writing on an overdue paper, and I just cited a dissertation from 1980 that I love, and a clever paper from 1960 that I read in grad school. (It argues that vowel nasalization is distinctive in English because of pairs like camp/cap, where camp can be pronounced with just a nasal vowel and no [m].) Citing those makes me happy. #AcademicChatter #Linguistics

So, I start a new job in a couple of days, one that will be full of adventure, I am sure. I will be working on the small island of Kikaijima (in southern #Japan), which is rimmed with corals and built up with fossil reefs. I will be working with a bunch of young, ambitious scientists in training on a variety of subjects, all in Japanese!

I am hoping to be a bit more active in my posting here, as I will be having more adventures. What kind of science content does the #Fediverse want to see? #AcademicChatter

The machines are fine. I'm worried about us.

On AI agents, grunt work, and the part of science that isn't replaceable.

Aaaah. Desk reject (with note to pass on to new sister journal) - a couple of days short of 2 weeks. Oh well, at least it was relatively quick. Hopefully my grad student (his first manuscript) will take it ok. I know this is good/useful work so hmmm might send it someplace...higher; we'll see.
