Sometimes…

There are days that hold added weight and make it difficult to write, or do much of anything.

I guess they’re a part of life, the shadows that we also write.

Painful balance.

Going to the dark place is easy, it’s getting back that’s difficult. Sometimes it comes for me. Memories of abuse, hatred, and rejection. I’m a writer, I use them, but they still hurt.

Be everwell.

So, the 23rd…

The day I don’t talk about with anyone, not anymore. The day those I know IRL pretend doesn’t exist, even after 18 years.

Their silence descends, and if I forget the unspoken “rules” and text, I don’t receive a reply for at least 24hrs, sometimes days.

The 23rd, the happiest day of my life, but those who should care have turned it into a day of deep depression. My long ago joy gone, I cry instead.

People are cruel, and cruelty has driven me to isolating.

reliable or unreliable narrator

I’m neither. I’m not the narrator at all.

I write in a Deep 3rd POV, so the trustworthiness of the narrator depends on the character.

Of course, even my most honest characters, since they aren’t omniscient, are prone to ignorance, misperceptions, and self-deluding beliefs.

Sometimes the reader is aware of their inaccuracies based on events or other POVs, but sometimes they aren’t.

choosing cryptids

I already have. At least, to a degree.

There are “sea monsters” in the Ontyre oceans, a problem for the people on the archipelago of Pannulus. The issue I ran into was that what we think of as sea monsters often have conflicting names in lore.

Given I write in a different world, I distributed names, and will live with my decisions. The one that was simple and consistent, and the least a cryptid, was the giant squid.

Allusions? In Mistaken Arrival, Ametha inadvertently sent great distances. There are many veiled references to The Wizard of Oz.

In Pannulus, their language is sprinkled with 1920s slang, but none that references prohibition.

Every fantasy author writing in another world will draw the line between worlds in a different place. It’s the fit that matters, and consistency. After all, I changed my approach.

I finished my final read-thru of Book-4 last night and my throat is raw, even though I try to not stress my voice too much.

Yes, in 4.5 days, I read the entire book aloud.

You do what you have to do. I survived, as I always do, and I’ll be okay. Now, all that remains is for me to update any front and back matter that requires it and move on to formatting. I’m close to the end.

Be everwell.

Good day!

I’ve been dreaming so intensely lately that I’ve been waking up exhausted in the morning, and then struggling to stay awake.

My brain has thrown everything at me, from endless running to one dilemma after another to trauma. No more, please.

Be everwell.

links to the real world

When I developed the worldbuilding for Ontyre 26-years ago, it was to write a portal fantasy series. I actually wrote it. It wasn’t great.

Then, life stuff, severe illness…

I returned to Ontyre in 2012 unclear what I’d do with it (that came in 2016), but made the decision to sever ties to Earth. I never use Earth events (overtly), names, phrases, or quotes. At most, I vaguely allude to fictional works.

the book world where I’ll one day live

My own, of course. That’s most of the reason I developed it, and am writing it into existence.

The World of Ontyre.

The other obvious reason is knowing it extremely well already. I’ve written 13 novels and countless other works there. It’s my refuge when this world becomes too much, which is quite often.

It also isn’t medieval, which is a fascinating period, but not one I want to live in.
