FIVE chapters left to edit in Book-5.

It’s crazy, but I began worldbuilding Carrdia and writing its first story simultaneously, including realizing I needed at least a preliminary map.

I grabbed a scrap sheet of paper, flipped it over, and went wild sketching. At least 85% of that map endured.

What would’ve happened to my stories, I wonder, if I’d sketched a different map?

7 chapters left to edit in Book-5!

I miss mapmaking and have been reviewing old ones. The original Tremjara map is from 2002 (created in Paint). Dimensions: 754 x 531 pixels.

The 2020 Tremjara map’s dimensions: 4800 x 3200 pixels.

If you zoom in on the old map it blurs immediately. That land maze in the NW? Scrapped in 2003. The color palette was severely limited.

EIGHT chapters left to edit in Book-5!

I was the teen who never revised in school, though, in those days I had to rewrite papers by hand. I detested doing that, so I endured the red ink.

Now, I have to guard against over-editing, placing word efficiency ahead of readability. It’s the battle between my practical and creative sides.

It’s my practical side that plans and organizes.

NINE chapters left to edit in Book-5!

After, there’s a novella to edit. They’ll be published together after Book-4.

Why? The novella, Trellis House, serves as a bridge between Books 4 and 6. Confused yet?

On the timeline, Book-5 occurs simultaneously with Book-2, but would spoil Book-4 if published sooner. So, the series steps back, then moves ahead with the novella.

TEN chapters left to edit in Book-5!

To reach that number, yet again, I finished while having supper because I lost the morning to hiking.

Normally, I’d sacrifice a day here and there, but with Book-5 it’s become “a thing” because I went so long without missing a day. Now I’m obsessed with seeing if I can make it.

Someone needs to slap me if I become obsessed with this again.

This rediscovered hybrid map has me reliving my 2017 Tremjara painting project when I also made changes as I went.

While painting the west, I’d glance at the east, an idea forming that became Pannulus.

It’s missing here.

Well, part of one island is there. Two years before, I’d written short stories for an unknown location. That location became the archipelago of Pannulus.

I stumbled across a map of the Tremjara continent that shouldn’t exist. Yet, does.

When I painted the map in 2017, I went off a clean black & white map, yet here’s my starting place on top of the 2015 version of the map.

I have no memory of doing this, but love it. It captures the moment between one map and another.

More than color differentiates the 2015 and 2018 maps.

Pulling history into a story…

Maps, but not like I share online and in my books. I mean, physical maps that the characters find and/or use.

This is prominent in Book-5 when a map sets off a chain of events, but also uncovers an expedition in the past that should’ve been impossible.

In Book-1, thanks to a map, Riparia sees the Tremjara continent for the first time.

Pulling history into a story…

I must mention heritage, as in anyone’s past and/or family history. For many of my characters, those pasts are significant, but Riparia’s most of all, a past she doesn’t want, and that’s increasingly a burden.

This is also true of the Barnavava wizards, who spin a tale of their origins that Riparia suspects isn’t 100% true.

Pulling history into a story…

Teachers, or professors. No, not one of my professors, but Maniff, a professor of history in Kovenlore Chronicles. It’s worthwhile having someone who sees history in everything.

Fortunately, he doesn’t always share.

He recognizes the past, understands it, and can compare how present courses relate to it. Oh, and he’s the love interest
