It’s the third such deal the Interior Department has struck to pay firms to abandon plans for offshore turbines, spending roughly $2.5 billion to get companies to abandon their wind projects.

Under the agreement #Invenergy will voluntarily surrender 4 leases in federal waters for #WindFarms that would have been located in the New York Bight, off the Central Coast of California & in the Gulf of Maine. All of those projects were in the early stages of development & had little chance of moving forward under the #Trump admin, which has halted all federal permitting for offshore #wind.

The government will then reimburse Invenergy $765 million, or somewhat less than what the company had paid for the leases under the #Biden admin.

In exchange, #Invenergy said it would put that money toward the development of at least 5 new natural #gas fired #PowerPlants in the #Midwest, as well as in geothermal projects in the Western #US.

The agreement is similar to deals that the #Trump admin has struck since March with other companies, including French energy giant TotalEnergies, to abandon #WindFarms off California, New Jersey, New York & North Carolina in exchange for investing in #FossilFuel projects.

The announcement means the government has so far spent roughly $2.5 billion of #TaxpayersMoney to get companies to terminate offshore #wind leases.

But #Trump has criticized the technology as ugly, falsely claimed it is inefficient & has sought to block new #wind turbines. Last year, the #Interior Dept ordered work to stop on 5 #WindFarms already under construction off the East Coast, but federal #judges struck down all of those moves. The #Pentagon has also sought to halt approvals of wind farms on land.

…While previous deals had committed companies to investing only in #FossilFuels like natural #gas, #Invenergy said it was also planning to invest in #geothermal #energy projects. Geothermal plants, which can run at all hours & emit few #GreenhouseGas #emissions [shhh, don’t tell #Trump], are one of the few #RenewableEnergy sources that have found favor with the Trump admin.

Trump admin officials indicated that more such agreements could be in the works.

#Interior Secy #DougBurgum said in a statement that offshore #wind projects made more financial sense under the #Biden admin, which offered lucrative #TaxCredits for wind turbines, #solar panels, #electric cars & other #green #technologies. The #Republican-controlled #Congress eliminated those incentives last summer [🖕🏻].

…#DougBurgum also repeated his claim that offshore #wind projects pose #NationalSecurity risks. Last year, the #Interior Dept cited national security concerns in ordering a halt to construction of the 5 offshore wind projects on the East Coast. But the agency has not detailed those concerns in public, &, earlier this year, several federal #judges said they were unconvinced by the admin’s arguments.

Proponents of #wind projects criticized the deals, pointing out that regions like the NE #US were counting on the #WindFarms to meet rising #electricity demand & could now face future #shortages.

“Replacing coastal offshore wind with geothermal or natural gas infrastructure in another region does nothing to address rising ratepayer #affordability concerns, reliability challenges or potential gaps in #power supply in the #Northeast & #midAtlantic,” said Hillary Bright, exec dir of Turn Forward….

@Nonilex it doesn't matter what the efficiency is to a point. Current regulations require all generators to have a spinning reserve so they are required to spill wind to meet sudden increases in demand. Otherwise you're just capturing energy that is there. If we could get to the point where we had massive distributed energy storage, the regulations could be rewritten for more sustainable energy. I personally don't think they are ugly but I do think smoggy skies are.

@Nonilex Absolutely brilliant. 🙄 While he pushes AI, crypto, etc., he kills off additional sources of energy that is crucial for said tech to operate.
