…despite #DOJ officials claiming the effort is dead.…, US District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema issued a preliminary injunction blocking the fund…. She forcefully rejected the government’s arguments that the case was moot, citing #Trump’s praising of the idea & acting AG #ToddBlanche’s unwillingness to say under the penalty of perjury that the admin will not try to stand it up in the future.

#Trump nominated his fmr personal atty #ToddBlanche to serve as AG, elevating a loyal lickspittle who, as the acting AG, has shown a willingness to execute Trump’s outrageous demands. The announcement comes as scrutiny of Blanche intensifies over his role in a plan to create a $1.8 billion #SlushFund with #TaxpayersMoney to pay those claiming they were victims of government mistreatment, including #insurgents who attacked the Capitol on #Jan6, 2021.

Trump Nominates Blanche for Attorney General, Setting Up Confirmation Fight

As acting attorney general, Todd Blanche has shown a willingness to execute the president’s maximalist demands. Whether the Senate will confirm him remains unclear.

Cassidy’s amendment to compensate the injured police officers was a pointed rebuke, as payouts from Trump’s #SlushFund could have potentially gone to Trump supporters who beat police & attacked the Capitol on #Jan6. Cassidy lost reelection last month after #Trump endorsed a primary opponent.

He said that, despite #ToddBlanche’s comments, the fund is still part of an active settlement and “absolutely can be used.”

#Republicans cleared the last major hurdle overnight when they defeated an amendment proposed by one of their own members, Louisiana Sen. #BillCassidy, that would have redirected payments from the settlement to members of law enforcement who were injured when a mob of #Trump supporters seeking to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss attacked the Capitol on #Jan6, 2021.

Senate OKs $70B immigration enforcement bill without Trump fund limits

The Senate has passed legislation to fund President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement agencies, sending it to the House. The Friday morning passage came after weeks of delays and fierce backlash to an unrelated $1.776 billion settlement fund that threatened to derail the bill. Senators voted for the $70 billion legislation to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol for the next three years, through the end of Trump’s term. The final vote came after Republicans narrowly defeated multiple attempts to add language to the bill that would permanently ban Trump’s settlement fund to compensate allies who believe they've been politically persecuted. The House is expected to take up the bill next week.

#Republicans appear to be in a holding pattern while they figure out how to address the issue of the $1.8 billion #SlushFund. We are still waiting on votes from 3 Republicans: #BillCassidy of Louisiana, #JonHusted of Ohio & #DanSullivan of Alaska.

Husted & Sullivan are both up for re-election. Cassidy recenty lost his primary to a Trump-backed challenger.

Senator #ThomTillis, Republican of North Carolina, who is introducing his own amendment to ban the $1.8 billion payout #SlushFund, just voted “no” on Schumer’s motion. That’s because Schumer’s motion would send the underlying #immigration bill, which Tillis supports, back to committee. It is an indication that this motion may not garner any Republican support, even though many #Republicans also want to codify into #law a ban on the fund.

Senator #SusanCollins, Republican of Maine, just voted for Schumer’s motion, the first #Republican to vote “yes.”

This motion can still fail if three Republicans vote for it, if everyone is voting. Collins is up for re-election in a critical & competitive state.

Senator #ThomTillis, who voted no, is not running for re-election.
