Agi: Il colera dilaga nel nordest, la Nigeria prende le contromisure

AGI - La polizia della Nigeria ha dichiarato di aver intensificato le misure igienico-sanitarie nello Stato nord-orientale di Borno, dove un'epidemia di colera ha già causato decine di morti. Secondo gli ultimi dati delle autorità sanitarie locali, nelle ultime settimane circa 39 persone sono morte a causa della malattia trasmessa dall'acqua in tutto il Borno, con almeno 4.204 contagiati.
L'epidemia di colera sta colpendo Maiduguri
L'epidemia è concentrata a Maiduguri, capitale del Borno, e nel distretto circostante di Jere, come riportato dalle autorità sanitarie in un aggiornamento di martedì. Il commissario di polizia dello stato "ha ordinato la piena applicazione dell'esercitazione mensile di igiene ambientale", ha dichiarato il Comando di Polizia dello Stato di Borno in un comunicato stampa diffuso ieri sera. "I residenti sono pertanto invitati a partecipare attivamente all'esercitazione pulendo le proprie case, le attività commerciali, i canali di scolo e gli ambienti circostanti", aggiunge il comunicato. "Per garantire il rispetto delle norme, agenti di polizia e altri soggetti interessati saranno dispiegati in posizioni strategiche in tutto lo stato durante il periodo di sanificazione".

Nel frattempo, il governo statale ha istituito centri di trattamento dedicati.

Il colera si diffonde attraverso acqua e cibo contaminati da batteri e può causare disidratazione e diarrea. I moderni sistemi di depurazione delle acque reflue hanno praticamente eliminato la malattia in gran parte del mondo ricco. Ma guerra, conflitti e povertà - tutti fattori ben noti nello stato di Borno, epicentro di una lunga insurrezione jihadista - rappresentano importanti fattori di rischio per un'epidemia.

The cholera epidemic is hitting Maiduguri
The epidemic is concentrated in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno, and the surrounding Jere district, as reported by health authorities in an update on Tuesday. The state police commissioner "ordered the full implementation of the monthly environmental hygiene exercise," the Borno State Police Command said in a statement released yesterday evening. “Residents are therefore invited to actively participate in the exercise by cleaning their homes, businesses, drainage channels and surrounding areas,” the statement added. “To ensure compliance with the rules, police officers and other stakeholders will be deployed in strategic locations throughout the state during the sanitation period.”

Cholera spreads through contaminated water and food containing bacteria and can cause dehydration and diarrhea. Modern wastewater purification systems have virtually eliminated the disease in much of the wealthy world. But war, conflict and poverty – all well-known factors in the Borno state, the epicenter of a long jihadist insurgency – represent important risk factors for an epidemic.
