RE: https://social.coop/@cwebber/116217477822586442

The whole "AI" industry is just based on the hope that they can deskill people fast enough that they'll have to rent back cognitive support systems. Forever.

It's like Uber. Just that they don't try to break existing transportation infrastructures but your brain.

@tante Spot-on!

@xgebi @cwebber @tante @nixCraft it is not just code or programming it is all cognitive capabilities. Writing. Drawing. Inventing. Planning. Criticising. Condensing.

And the more I talk to AI users, they are using it because they are lonely. And they are looking for companions. Living people might not be available all the time. The ai is. I fear the damage in social structures.

@tante and also, the whole power dynamic of shifting home/personal computing back to a mainframe that you need to buy time on. what has already happened with a lot of software moving to a "rent, but never own" model
@patrick_h_lauke @tante Interesting vid posted yesterday by Rick Beato https://youtu.be/YTLnnoZPALI?si=9DOCmiCwURXovAR6

@patrick_h_lauke @tante I actually prefer software subscriptions, so long as they’re reasonably priced. I’ve seen too many apps fade and die because their devs can’t afford to maintain them. I like open source, but we’ve convinced ourselves that software should be free, which is as much of a delusion as saying AI isn’t massive intellectual property theft.
@patrick_h_lauke @tante I will agree that large corporations are virtually forcing us into cloud storage and on demand downloads so that we’re dependent on them. I had to jump through hoops to keep local copies of my files.

@ArtGeek @patrick_h_lauke @tante

I prefer Davinci Resolve's model of selling permanent licenses to each major release. So you pay a few hundred bucks to own the software indefinitely, but if they release a version with a bunch of new features you can pay to upgrade. Much more ethical than subscriptions.

@contrasocial @ArtGeek @tante ditto with CaptureOne, Ableton Live...
That works too, and it’s a sustainable business model. If the software provides any cloud services, then it pretty much has to be a subscription.
@tante Cool, cool. So, when are they going to ship this supposed intelligence? 🙃

@tante

It's extra funny because his technology is garbage and is not capable, in any form, of replacing or even augmenting human intelligence.

Any database in which 20% of the data is wrong, but you don't know which 20%, is a database in which 100% of the data is useless.

He can dream shit like this up as much as he wants, but it's not going to happen.

No matter how much the Bosses shovel LLMs down our throats, they're never going to not be garbage.

@johnzajac He doesn't need to be able to genuinely improve the product. Just make a good enough sales pitch. Enshittification is the business model.
@tante

@johnzajac @tante

Altman’s superpower is as a mesmerizer.

He is an extremely proficient con man.

What the human race needs is a much more violent reaction to people like him in that they violently reject the con they just are allergic to it and treat people like him as the pariah he needs to be

@tante not to mention the “if it’s 80% of the way there it’s good enough to ship” logic that a lot of companies are using to justify mass firing employees. Substituting human logic for half-right generated nonsense.
@tante @cwebber I’d state it needs intelligence to distinguish intelligence from experience, knowledge and pattern recognition. I don’t know what this says about Sam Altman 😇
@tante yes. And whoever believes the usage will remain cheap is just naive at this point.
@tante Yep... and it's been obvious for many, but sadly not nearly enough.
@tante @wilbowma @cwebber god dammit this is so fucking bleak
@tante but who is going to buy it when everyone's broke?

@lritter @tante I think the answer to this question may put you in despair.

But don't fret; even good ol' Marie Antoinette already had an answer for that.

@ftranschel @lritter @tante despair aside (despair may be a luxury when compared to survival), I think you hit it on the head. Deskill to rent back skill but no skill means no money to buy back.

It’s like selling a home while you’re sleeping in it.

@tante Only the shit they'll sell back to you will be worse because LLMs are inferior to their inputs...

...and nobody using it will know enough to see that.

How the Koch Brothers Are Killing Public Transit Projects Around the Country

In communities across the country, the billionaire conservatives are waging a sophisticated fight against new rail projects and bus routes.

The New York Times

@Npars01 @tante

irony in that they’ve installed a party and a president with who engaged in a war that will demonstrate yet again why global supply chains in this case the global supply chain dependent on oil, not only for energy, but as a feed stock necessary for their industrialized food, production and for the extraction of resources necessary not only for “green” energy but almost everything in the global supply chain infrastructure is fragile

The great simplification is a thing

@tante

Not just "AI". I can't believe people rush to subscribe to taps where techbros siphon our money.

You want to call people? There's a subscription for that. You want to listen to music/watch movies? There's a subscription for that. You want to have a door camera? There's a subscription for that. You want to make dinner? There's a subscription for that. You want to edit documents? There's a subscription for that. You want to learn a language? There's a subscription for that.

@tante

Clarifications to billionaires:
Water and electricity are not services, they are HUMAN RIGHTS. Without those two things, people go back to middle age and/or die.

The so-called "artificial intelligence" has NOTHING intelligent about it. Comparing a computer program to the human brain is a marketing and propaganda operation.

Rich people think Human Rights are just "services" they can cut off if you dont pay.
Sadly, they convinced many people that that is true.

@tante

Just the trouble I went through to watch that clip (gatekeepers who are easily challenged by consumers with demands, lol) shows you how they can't make this powerful, unless you pay for it.

It's like the encryption app that won't work unless all your friends use it—and they all don't.

Our strength in our convictions, leading to our purchasing choices, IS their Achilles Heel.

Lenovo just defaulted all their Thinkpads to Linux Ubuntu, all on their own, only as the result of consumer complaints about the latest Microsoft release.

@tante also not to mention breaking access to information
@tante someone needs to make that fvcker Altman go and do another 6 years of primary school. JFC what a clown.
@tante I have a dream, AI can help us and can be helpful tool, but needs to be in hands of people not corporations. imagine something like distributed LLM running some federated way, allowing parcitipants to prompt for exchange of some small portion of compute time of their machine. Trained the same way. Project seti[at]home can be inspiration. And yep I know I have declare now myself as enemy of state and fediverse, but I truly believe this shall be way. We can eradicate AI datacenters, distribute energy usage cross world, save water and destroy that technobross seizure of our future.
@tante it's already annoying my dad is hyping chatgpt like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Like he's raving about cognitive decline. That's not what I want for myself.
@tante they’ve moved on from building the Torment Nexus to speed-running an old Asimov story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Feeling_of_Power

@tante
I cannot express enough how disgusting and inhuman I believe Sam's statement is. There needs to be an island for folx who have chosen not to engage as humans with other humans. That this is presented as a normal human being with a normal human thought is mind boggling.

@Petesmom
So glad you summarised the same revulsion I feel at Altman’s statement… still trying to comprehend that someone, anyone, a person, would could has said this: “"We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter..." -- Sam Altman”

#sickPuppy #AISlop #AI #weirdo #intelligence
@tante

@Petesmom @tante Your island idea is too generous. I'd be happy to see someone drag them out of their mansions and beat them to death in the streets.
@tante how many tokens do you really need when they are practically free and you have some time to kill? they are already losing billions, the toxic combo of bill, sam, and elon has effectively killed any hopes of acting in good will or good faith with these guys. There are alternatives, i think it is going to take small biz a few years but viable alternatives will crop up that will alter opportunity cost, cut out the middleman #frank is dead #fair use LV
@tante They're already halfway done in some places. Some folks can't read, write, or do basic arithmetics without tool support anymore. Let alone summarize, argue, or conceptualize.

@tante

People don't recognize how insidious things like those Roku "chill coffee shop" muzak channels are, as part of the whole deal to make minds mushy.

People have absolutely been enshittified along the way. The technology is proving that.

@tante Yup. The whole skit seems to be attempting to bring the expected level of human ability DOWN, so they could make money.

Fucking crazy… 🤦‍♂️

@tante He wanted to say "futility", then corrected.

@tante

The love of money is the root of insanity.

This is exhibit A.

@tante

Making money out of something that now is freely available and is stolen by them...
knowledge.

@tante Rick Beato - of all people - made me much more optimistic this morning when he pointed out that far from "owning" the LLMs, all the tech bro companies will go the way of the big expensive music studios when everyone ends up doing it themselves on their own laptop. Excellent point well made, I think...

@mossman yeah I didn't find his argument very convincing tbh

@tante @mossman

I don’t know what his argument is, but one thing I will ask about any technology is who ends up in control. With computers that people could buy for not so much money and software producing music became widely available. But we are not free of consolidated control of distribution. Musicians are still kind of fucked. See Spotify.

If computers were AI processing is not widely available we’re fucked. There is already talk of personal computers being made for lease only.

@mossman @tante maybe true, but the tech-bros will make sure the hardware needed will be out of reach or needs subs.
@BubblegumYeti @tante my 16 year old desktop is still going strong (in fact, Windows games now run better under Linux). Hardware can last a long time these days if the user has control. Unlike the phone I bought three years ago for my work mail and Teams... where the &%^£ing corporate admin has just decided that the Android version is too old and therefore "insecure" and bricked the work account! (I am pissed off they expect me to buy a new phone because of their stupid policy!)
@mossman @tante Yes true... they can't control Linux :)
@tante
Perhaps they will make it illegal to be educated. They could treat it as theft of the intellectual property of the elite. I suppose the punishment would be lobotomy!

@Quasit @tante

Do not fucking give them ideas!

@Mikal @Quasit @tante Aren't we heading that way? They don't need to make it illegal, just completely defund education especially in poorer communities... they are already doing that.
Flaming torches and pitchforks (and the yanks keep on rattling about that their right to arm bears is to defend against a government that turns into dictatorship...)

@tante

techbroligarchs really are fucking idiots

i have no fucking idea way anyone listens to any of them
