An entire historic building was destroyed by the fascist invader.

But this is not a historic building in Ukraine.

This is The White House in Washington DC.

#EastWing

@randahl
That's so shocking and horrendous. Don't even have words for that. And I am not even a US citizen.

Was talking to my wife about this yesterday. And we wondered what would happen if a German chancellor just decides to knock down a good part of the Reichstag or the Kanzleramt.

That would cause an absolute outrage and I can very much imagine that that chancellor would get kicked out right away.

@ruedi the same for Denmark. People would chain themselves to the excavators to prevent this.
@randahl
Which I imagine is a big part of why he didn't go through the proper channels and just knocked it down without even telling anyone in advance :(
@ruedi

@randahl
Yeah, totally.

Apart from the fact that the German chancellor and probably also the Danish prime minister can't just hire a demolition company to knock down government buildings.

Any company resp. CEO taking on that kind of job would get the crap sued out of them.

Unbelievable. But yet... here we are.

@ruedi @randahl
It would be more like Steinmeier would destroy a wing of the "Schloss Bellevue".

Still people argue this is "only one of the renovations POTUS use to do" 😑
I don't think so.

@grootinside @randahl
Agreed.

I just decided to mention the Reichstag cause it's more well known.

@ruedi @randahl Probably German bureaucracy would happen. From my understanding, in German politics, it's neither intended nor custom that the chancellor can just order things to happen as they wish.
That might not persuade some sociopath from trying, but German bureaucrats can become very uncoorperative if they want to be.

@h0ru2 @randahl
Very true.

Of course the chancellor has some sort of power to decide things. But most policy discussion are held in the so-called Kabinett or need to go through Bundestag, topical committees or even the Bundesrat.

As much as German bureaucracy can drive you up the wall it can also serve as a regulating factor.

@ruedi @randahl "MachtΓΌbernahme" by Arne Semsrott sheds some light on this. German bureaucrats are bound by law to resist illegal directives. And they can use the processes. There is one case where a minister wanted young ladies as waitresses for gatherings. The ministerial officials found enough reasons to reject it every time. Two reasons were: "We have no idea, what pay grade that would be." and "The women would need to handle food. So, we need to find out how to do it." So it never happened.
@randahl Trump: succeeding where Bin Laden failed.
@randahl Also removed mature trees and the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.
@randahl
I'd seen the photos taken on the ground, but they don't do justice to it. This really is the ultimate allegory for Trump's rule.

@randahl

Don’t call Trump an invader. He won the election. We Americans need to face that.

@railmeat @randahl We know that the USA citizenry was either too stupid, too morally bankrupt or too apathetic to vote against him. But the position he was voted into should not give him carte blanche to do all this.
@randahl
Where.
Is.
The.
Revolt???

@Eetschrijver
Just wait for it, in two months there will be the next #noKings parade.
I promise: We WILL see martial law in the US.
And the military WILL shoot at their legs.
Meanwhile, the democrats slide their reading glasses to the tip of their nose and cite the STRONGLY WORDED LETTER they have sent to the government.

@randahl

@populistensohn
Well, I'm not taking the bet, for you might well be right.
@randahl
@Eetschrijver
Of course... It would be an immoral bet...
This is all so sad.
@randahl
@populistensohn
It definitely is. And here I was thinking I expected the worst. THIS sure as hell wasn't on my bingo card.
@randahl
@Randahl Fink - It is the American way. A city like New York, from the 1600s, have only a few buildings left from the 16- 17- and 1800s - It was all demolished and built again.
@randahl someone just ignored Federal Historic Preservation law to build a lesser replica of #putin #ballroom
@randahl Part of me has to agree with Trump that the White House needs a bigger congress room for receiving (international) guests. Right now they use tents in the garden. That doesn't work in winter and has safety issues.
But it should be possible to build this with respect to the remaining building and not this ugly addon Trump has come up with...
@randahl So many balls. So little time.

@randahl

BUT OBAMA BUILT A FULL BASKETBALL COURT

@populistensohn He converted the tennis court
@3rdi
So even worse! He took away from all tennis loving future presidents!
@randahl remembering and thinking about my course Representation of power when I was a history student in the 90ties. All those 'grande' buildings put up mostly by powerhungry leaders through the ages. From the Pharaohs and Roman emporors, kings Constantine and Charlemagne to Ludwig of Bavaria, Hitler, Stalin and the current autocrats.
@Frieke72 another person here on Mastodon mentioned the Volkshalle, which Hitler wanted in Berlin.

@randahl building plan was called Germania. There's a Große Halle (big hall). It also contained a massive .... Arch.

Look up pictures and see the similarities with the maquette of it and trumps' 🫣 Megalomania is of all times.

@Frieke72 the ideological overlap is striking.
@randahl it is. I think the usa is about to find out what it means to have a full-blown dictatorship and perhaps war in it's own territory
@Eetschrijver @Frieke72 @randahl I read that Hitler built a ballroom on top of his bunker. Yes, thΓ‘t bunker. Guess what's below the East Wing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Emergency_Operations_Center
Presidential Emergency Operations Center - Wikipedia

@cookingroffa @Eetschrijver @randahl yeah, there are rumours going around that whitehouse bunker is being upgraded/extended.
@cookingroffa @Eetschrijver @randahl and then watch Bannons interview with the Economist (2028 deadline)
@Frieke72 @Eetschrijver @randahl is that the interview where he says they will soon reveal the plan for a third term?

@randahl

Putin smiles widely.

@randahl Whether or not the art etc. was removed prior to demolition is still a question
@randahl Oh come on! A man who didn't get the peace Nobel prize despite the low effort he made at least deserves a ballroom, hm? And it needs to be big, otherwise his disgusting ego wouldn't fit in.
@randahl The walls would be easy to build back. The symbol and the values have long been eroded, molded, decaying, and now they collapse.
@randahl For sure there were no other large ball rooms in Washington, D.C. πŸ˜’
@randahl - Stupid people Do Stupid things.
@randahl Probably went to the UK and was displeased why his 'castle' didn't have a ballroom like King Charles has in his

@randahl

So how will The Orange One get in his bunker now?

As I understand it, it was below that destroyed building.

@randahl no image desc, boo you
@randahl The things this freak will do to distract attention from the Epstein files.
@randahl I thought the government was shutdown
@randahl
If I remember correctly, Trump and the republicans demonstrated their openness to removing historic buildings and replacing them with more appropriate ones when removing Civil War statues.
