I know someone who worked with Musk directly, many many years ago, and they had an interesting observation (paraphrasing):

“It seemed like he just was an expert in everything, holding forth on all these topics I knew very little about. But then when he started speaking in my area of expertise, I realized he didn’t really understand much at all. He was just really good at picking up the vocabulary and patterns of speech of a domain and imitating them.”
