This is disgraceful. An inauguration speech attacking the outgoing president & administration. It’s really hard to watch.
#Trump repeated his claim, made countless times during the 2024 campaign, “many from prisons & mental institutions” had illegally entered the country through the southern border. He has offered no evidence for this.
(I still think he doesn’t understand the meaning of “asylum seekers” he thinks they are people from insane asylums)
With his opening lines that “we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer,” #Trump plunges into a list of #grievances, describing America as a nation willing to spend “in the defense of foreign borders” — read: #Ukraine — “but refuses to defend American borders.”
This is a redux of his 2017 “American Carnage” address: He describes America as a catastrophic mess of crime & chaos.
He speaks of “annihilation” & disparages the current government — w/ #Biden sitting nearby.
#Trump calls his election a mandate to end “a horrible betrayal” & declares that “America’s decline is over.”
#Biden has a slight smile on his face as Trump talks about betrayal. He was no doubt ready for a speech that would denounce his admin.
Biden & Harris are watching as Trump promises to declare an emergency at the border & gets a standing ovation from many in the Rotunda. Biden is watching w/his hand over his mouth. Needless to say, neither is applauding.
#Biden rests he chin on his left hand, one finger over his lips, as he hears his successor describe an America in decline & invoking the “Alien & Enemies Act of 1798” to justify his coming crackdowns.
As #Trump disparages immigrants as criminals & outlines his plans — there are not “millions & millions of criminal aliens” as he claims — a largely white crowd is applauding in the Rotunda.
#Trump uses his speech to declare that there “are only two genders: male and female,” according to government policy. That has to be a first for an inaugural speech.
Trump declares that he will stop efforts to “socially engineer #race & #gender into every aspect of public & private life” & will instead “forge a society that is colorblind & merit-based.” (Yeah, right)
Unreal, #Trump, after saying he wants to be a “peacemaker,” said he plans to rename the #GulfOfMexico the “Gulf of America.”
Hillary Clinton burst out laughing when Trump said he would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
#Trump also hails President McKinley, who got the #PanamaCanal going & fought the Spanish-American war. Trump is making it clear that he wants control of the canal back, & falsely claims that “#China is operating the Panama Canal.” He ends by saying “we’re taking it back.”

#Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino said the #PanamaCanal “is & will continue” to belong to Panama.
His remarks respond to what #Trump said about the canal during his #inauguration speech.
The Panama Canal “has foolishly been given to the country of Panama after the United States — the United States, I mean, think of this, spent more money than ever spent on a project before & lost 38,000 lives in the building of the Panama Canal,” Trump said. “We gave it to Panama, & we’re taking it back.”
President Mulino responded in a Spanish-language statement saying, “I must reject in its entirety the words expressed by President Donald #Trump regarding #Panama & its Canal.”
“The Canal is & will continue to be Panama’s & its administration will continue to be under Panamanian control with respect to its permanent neutrality,” the statement reads.
In his speech, #Trump also suggested that “#China is operating the #PanamaCanal.”
Mulino rejected that, saying, “There is no presence of any nation in the world that interferes with our administration.”
Mulino also responded to #Trump’s assertion that the canal was given to #Panama.
“The Canal was not a concession from anyone. It was the result of generational struggles that culminated in 1999, as a result of the Torrijos-Carter treaty &, since then until now, for 25 years, without interruption, we have managed & expanded it responsibly to serve the world & its commerce, including the United States,” Mulino said in his statement.
The new #Trump White House on Monday said that President Trump would withdraw the #UnitedStates from the #ParisAgreement, the pact among almost all nations to fight #ClimateChange.
By withdrawing, the US would join #Iran, #Libya & #Yemen as the only 4 countries not party to the agreement, under which nations work together to keep #GlobalWarming below levels that could lead to to #environmental catastrophe.
The move, one of several #energy-related announcements in the hours immediately following his inauguration, is yet another about-face in #UnitedStates participation in global #climate negotiations. During his first term #Trump withdrew from the #ParisAccord, but then President #Biden quickly rejoined in 2020 after winning the White House.
Scientists, activists & Democratic ofcls assailed the move as one that would deepen the #ClimateCrisis & backfire on American #workers.
Coupled with #Trump’s other #energy measures on Monday, withdrawal from the #ParisAccord signals his administration’s determination to double down on #FossilFuel extraction & production, & to move away from #CleanEnergy technologies like #ElectricVehicles & power-generating #wind turbines.
“If they want to be tough on #China, don’t punish US #automakers & hard-working Americans by handing our clean-car keys to the Chinese,” said Gina McCarthy, former White House #climate adviser & former head of the #EPA. “The #UnitedStates must continue to show leadership on the international stage if we want to have any say in how trillions of dollars in financial investments, policies & decisions are made.”
“President #Trump is choosing to begin his term pandering to the #FossilFuel industry & its allies,” the Union of Concerned #Scientists said in a statement. “His disgraceful & destructive decision is an ominous harbinger of what people in the #UnitedStates should expect from him & his anti-science cabinet.”
“#Trump’s irresponsibility is no surprise,” said Christiana Figueres, a Costa Rican diplomat and an architect of the #ParisAgreement in 2015. “In time, Trump will not be around but history will point to him and his #FossilFuel friends with no pardon.”

The #Pentagon unveiled a portrait of ret. Gen. #MarkMilley, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, earlier this month.
But now that #Trump is president, & hours after Milley received a pre-emptive pardon from #Biden on his way out the door, Milley's portrait appears to have been taken down.
Milley served in his Joint Chiefs role under both Trump & Biden, & according to a book by journalist Bob Woodward, Milley called Trump “a #fascist to the core.”
