IF FAST FASHION LABELS WERE TELLING THE TRUTH 👖👕👗

Just like cigarette companies have warning signs, should #FastFashion companies have warming labels as well? Fast fashion companies are known for their cheap and trendy #clothes, but at what cost? The fashion industry is one of the biggest #polluters in the world, and the fast #FashionIndustry is a significant contributor to this problem.

It's time to start thinking about the #impact our choices have on the planet. Let's demand more sustainable and ethical #fashion options.

FRENCH GOVERNMENT CONSIDERS TO BAN FAST FASHION

#Shein is the largest fashion retailer in the world -- seemingly popping up everywhere overnight. It's made billions by using #ForcedLabour and churning out cheap #plastic clothes that end up in #landfills.

Governments all over the world are considering penalties for companies that produce cheap, unsustainable clothes, and the French government is deciding right now whether or not to pass a similar bill.

1/7

This would be a HUGE win for the #environment -- what happens in #France will pave the path for others to follow. But #Shein 's lobbyists are firing all cylinders to stop the law from passing.

Let's build a massive call on France and all governments to listen to us, the #consumers, not powerful #lobbyists, and protect our #planet from the harms of #FastFashion:

Tell France and all governments: crack down on fast fashion!

2/7

The #FashionIndustry is one of the biggest #polluters – making up a staggering 10% of the world’s #CarbonEmissions. It dries up #WaterSources, pollutes #rivers, and #MicroPlastics from clothes end up in our #oceans and #seafood.

It’s crucial that the industry becomes green and fair.

France’s proposed law would completely ban fast fashion advertising and put an environmental surcharge on fast fashion items sold.

3/7

The money from the surcharge would then go to eco-friendly brands to support more sustainable fashion. It would be a game changer for how the industry operates, but only if the biggest fashion retailer stops roadblocking change.

Tell France and all governments: crack down on fast fashion!

What Does France’s ‘Ban’ On Fast Fashion Really Mean?

Last month, France’s lower house of parliament unanimously voted in favour of a bill that aims to reduce fast fashion.

The bill is the first of it’s kind, and if approved by the senate, will see France become the first country in the world to legislate against fast fashion and its devastating impacts.

As France weighs fast-fashion ban, is the circular economy the future of retail?

This week, France announced legislation to “limit the excesses of ultra-fast fashion”. Key measures include a ban on advertising for cheap textiles and an environmental charge on low-cost items. While the proposed laws need to pass a vote in France’s senate, they signal an increased need for focus on sustainability in the retail industry.

As France weighs fast-fashion ban, is the circular economy the future of retail?

With France announcing a ban on fast fashion and big brands like Selfridges offering repair and re-sell services, could the circular economy give retailers like Temu a run for their money?

Brands such as #Shein should be subject to penalties of up to 50% of their garments' selling price to offset their environmental impact, French ruling-majority MPs have proposed in a new bill.
The MPs say that ultra-fast fashion brands, rather than renewing their collections four times per year like traditional clothing brands, offer thousands of new products per day, inciting excessive #spending and unnecessary #pollution.

We're asking people with the privilege to do better to put their money somewhere that isn't damaging the planet or labourers.

SNL’ S 'XIEMU' AD HIGHLIGHTS THE APPEAL, AND ILLS OF FAST FASHION 👚👜👖🧦

If the deal seems too good to be true, it likely is. That was the subtext of Saturday Night Live’s bogus ad for “Xiemu,” the latest #FastFashion hitmaker from #China.

Parodying the meteoric rise of #e-commerce phenoms #Shein and #Temu, models pranced across the screen in $10 dresses and $5 shoes as a voiceover proclaimed, “How so cheap? Don’t worry about it!”

“No #prisoners involved!”

“Normal number of #WorkingHours each week!”

“No #lead!”

#SNL ’s latest skit playfully and adeptly made light of the dubious circumstances surrounding offshore #apparel juggernauts’ ultra-fast #SupplyChains and impossibly low MSRPs. It also highlighted the slick #advertising tactics firms have employed in order to pull the wool (or more likely, polyester) over the eyes of trend-obsessed, discount-hungry American shoppers.

“I laughed! I cried! But mostly I was impressed at how #SNL so deftly encapsulated the psychological phenomenon of ‘willful ignorance,’ where #consumers literally don’t worry about things they don’t want to know about, especially if it gets in the way of looking cute,” said Sourcing Journal sourcing and labor editor #JasminMalik-Chua.

Featuring SNL host and Oscar-winning actor #JakeGyllenhaal, the skit “illuminated the breadth of the problems

SNL’s ‘Xiemu’ Ad Highlights the Appeal, and Ills, of Fast Fashion

Saturday Night Live took on the ethics of fast fashion in a spoofed ad for "Xiemu."

Yahoo Life

related to certain Chinese e-commerce companies that have been linked to #ForcedLabor in their supply chains,” said National Council of Textile Organizations (#NCTO) president and CEO #KimGlas.

NCTO, along with other industry trade groups and lawmakers, has long lobbied against fast-fashion players’ unbridled access to U.S. shoppers. They’ve “aggressively” employed the de minimis trade provision “to ship undervalued and largely uninspected products to the U.S. market,” Glas said.

4/11

“The skit highlighted the ramifications of these practices for #consumers who unknowingly purchase #toxic products or products made with #SlaveLabor,” she added. At one point in the faux ad, Gyllenhaal incurs a nosebleed after sniffing his supposedly lead-free button down—a nod to the fact that many shoppers are largely uninformed about both the origins and the content of the products they buy.

“Our outdated trade provisions reward companies like ‘Shemu’ with duty-free treatment

5/11

on millions of shipments a day… simply by shipping something in a small box through the international mail,” Glas said. “The de minimis provision hurts the U.S. #TextileIndustry and our regional trade partners—devastating businesses that play by the rules and undermining all trade enforcement of #ForcedLabor and other #abuses,” she added.

“Don’t worry about it!” is the Xiemu ad’s refrain. But according to Glas, “We need to worry about it, and we need to close this #loophole now.”

6/11

The main driver of fashion’s ever-increasing #environmental and #social impact is the sheer volume of apparel produced globally, and it’s “abundantly clear that the Sheins and Temus of the world value growth over all else,” Remake senior advocacy manager #AlexaRoccanova told #SourcingJournal.

But it’s not just lawmakers that need to take action.

“The skit hones in on a very sad reality that despite the many pervasive issues that have been exposed in the #FashionIndustry,

7/11

from blatant #HumanRights violations to #ChemicalExposure, there are still many who are apathetic toward these truths,” Roccanova said. “The continued #sales growth of #FastFashion giants like #Shein and #Temu are evidence of this.”

The “ad” takes aim at this #ConsumerApathy when the voiceover asks the increasingly sketched-out shoppers—who begin to catch onto the themes of #ForcedLabor and #quality issues—whether they’d stop buying from “Xiemu”

8/11

if they knew for sure that production practices were indeed “shady.” The answer is a resounding “No.”

Roccanova is a bit more optimistic about the potential for a sea-change, though. “Fortunately, we’re also seeing a fast-growing movement of #ConsciousConsumers and advocates who are quick to spot #greenwashing efforts, call out fashion companies implicated in egregious environmental and labor rights violations, and advocate for a better industry,” she said.

9/11

“Customers want the #brands they shop from to do better and know that they have the resources to do so, but at the end of the day, #FastFashion as a business model is inherently #unsustainable.”

#MaxineBedat, executive director of the New Standard Institute, said the skit, while silly on the surface, actually highlights “the question of our time.”

“The SNL sketch was a funny take on an issue that is clearly concerning the average American,” she explained.

10/11

“The industry needs to look at itself in the mirror and ask, ‘Is this the direction we want to go?'”

Or, Bedat posits, “Are we going to start putting in some common sense rules, with legitimate #consequences, so that consumers can have trust in this industry, and we can build a sector that can thrive for generations to come?”

@anna_lillith if Americans aren't careful, they will soon enough end up wearing clothes made by slave labour in their *own* country; and also be forced to wear more "modest" fashions when/if that Project 2025 happens..
