@mastodonusercount Hey, welcome people to the #fediverse ! Hope you all enjoy your stay here! πŸ˜€

@mastodonusercount U r Lucky today cause elon is a stupid

@mastodonusercount I only discovered the #fediverse this week because I stopped being able to conveniently access reddit.

Love the concept, still adapting to the execution.

This will probably only reach the void but: is there a community for professional chemists or laboratory workers like r/chempros or r/labrats?

@Optimoose @mastodonusercount you might want Lemmy instead of Mastodon. Lemmy is the reddit clone. Mastodon is more like Twitter. Here's a good explanation of Lemmy:

There's a link in that post to a site where you can browse/search Lemmy communities.

@rabbit_fighter @mastodonusercount thanks, yes I've been playing around with Lemmy as well. The smallness of the communities reminds me of special interest forums back in the late 2000s.
@Optimoose There absolutely is a place for lab workers and chemists. You could try using the words "chemist", "chempro" and "labrat" in your introduction.. Just put a hashtag in front of those words. (Hashtags are gonna be your friend, here in the fediverse)
@Optimoose @mastodonusercount welcome! for group-like functionality take a look at https://a.gup.pe/
Gup

@Optimoose @mastodonusercount Yes! We mostly use #chemistry or #ChemiVerse when talking professionally. I'd say more academic than industry.

There's an instance called scholar.social for academic users.
@Optimoose @mastodonusercount I dont know the answer to this question but will forward it to @kzrt whos the only chemist I know on the fediverse
@Optimoose you can also follow hashtags. Use the subreddit name as your hashtag to follow and folks wandering here from there might use them too. Their post with those hashtags will show up in your main stream (Home). #labrats #chempros

@Optimoose @mastodonusercount I guess you can have more luck on Lemmy or Kbin instances, which are based on the same paradigm as reddit, and thus are much more consistently thematic than Mastodon instances.

As both are part of the Fediverse, you should be able to subscribe to Lemmy or Kbin communities from your Mastodon account to read and share posts and comments, but as those services are fairly new, the ability to comment from Mastodon is still patchy, at best.

@Optimoose @mastodonusercount Don't know about chemists but there's tons of other sorts of geeks here so probably.

If you're old enough to remember Usenet the population is similar to it. Not surprising since many of the people are here from there

@Optimoose @mastodonusercount
Mastodon is a group of federated servers, each flying under the rules of each administrator.
Mastodon.social is a big one. You might enjoy mstdn.science or sciencemastodon.com or fediscience.org. Your subject may be discoverable by using a hashtag #Chemistry, but only if the person posted using a hashtag.
It can feel a little lonely after coming from a central service.

You might want to follow @feditips until you have figured things out.

There is a group thing (I've never used it) - or there might an instance for #lab people or #chemists that you could join (not least for their local timeline).

All search here works via #hashtags that you can also subscribe to (by clicking on them and then selecting the little figure with the plus sign). Also follow lots of people. And use a 3rd party app to access mastodon from your mobile.

@Optimoose let me know if you find more lab tech folks! I think it's an important group to form community with.
@Optimoose @mastodonusercount I didn't see anything just now, but keep an eye on https://sub.rehab/, which is keeping track of alternate/migrating communities.

Interesting accounts to follow on Mastodon and the Fediverse

@Optimoose @mastodonusercount
Highly recommend adding a bio and include hashtags for #chemistry #chemiverse and similar. A profile image is also a good move. Hint: it doesn't need to be a photo of you. Maybe a chemistry related image?
@Optimoose I found one labrats in lemmy but it's new https://lemmy.world/c/labrats@discuss.tchncs.de
did you tried to ask jn # like fediHelp or fediAsk?

@Optimoose you'd be amazed how far posts can go on the Fediverse when you think they will only "reach the void".
@TerrorBite Yeah I woke up to dozens of replies πŸ˜…

@Optimoose @mastodonusercount haven’t found one (because I wasn’t looking for it). But this community is growing day by day.

Maybe keep posting using those hashtags and create one.

@Optimoose @mastodonusercount I'm definitely not a chemist or lab rat but try hashtags to find your people. There are many academic groups on here.

@mastodonusercount I'm pretty sure there are at least a few instances specifically for scientists but I'm afraid I don't remember their names offhand
@Me Welcome to the Fediverse!

@Optimoose Awesome. More hands-on folks here is really important. Its too many academics still. Great you are here in the #fediverse!

Pro-tip: have a picture (no matter what it is) as your avatar and write a short bio with the #introduction hashtag. That cranks up interaction and findability quite a lot!
