Laughter is great medicine even if it's forced

They say laughter is the best medicine. Michael Miller, a cardiologist and medical professor at the University of Pennsylvania, says they’re right. Laughter is an obvious stress reliever. But Miller says it’s even good for your heart. Madan Kataria — a physician in Mumbai and the founder of laughter yoga — agrees. Laughter yoga involves breathing exercises, light stretches, and silly movements and sounds that force you to laugh. Kataria suggests bringing laughter into your daily life, even at things that might not seem funny. Recently, he demonstrated what he calls "credit-card-bill laughter.” He held out his hand as if looking at a statement, and burst into a roiling, infectious laughter.

"The DOJ has removed 16 links to documents from its website even after initially releasing them. Again, it provided no explanation whatsoever for the withdrawal of certain documents….

It turns out, to no one’s surprise, some of these withdrawn documents contain images of Trump.

The DoJ is also attempting to put other officials and celebrities into the spotlight so that we talk about them instead of Trump."

If you're involved in the Mastodon / Fediverse #fediscovery programme, you've worked on the project, or you've been following its progress over the last year or so and you're going to this event, would you leave a comment in this thread?

It was funded as part of the EU NGI Search programme, and I think it's an interesting project. I'd like to learn more about it, and I figure others might as well:

I’ll add some links in the next post.

A good piece on how GenAI is flooding the field. I too have worked with ML for a while and feel similarly.

"Having done my PhD on AI language generation (long considered niche), I was thrilled we had come this far. But the awe I felt was rivaled by my growing rage at the flood of media takes and self-appointed experts insisting that generative AI could do things it simply can’t, and warning that anyone who didn’t adopt it would be left behind."

Generative AI hype distracts us from AI’s more important breakthroughs

It's a seductive distraction from the advances in AI that are most likely to improve or even save your life

@john it's ... complicated. We are working on #fediscovery which is opt-in across more than one server instance, which is more than you otherwise get. The overall search and discovery element has a lot of trust and safety concerns.
@andypiper @john fosdem25 talk "Fediscovery: Improving Search and Discovery on the Fediverse" looked promising. I listened again now, its says consent based on "discoverable" and "indexable" setting which already exist https://archive.fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event/fosdem-2025-4531-fediscovery-improving-search-and-discovery-on-the-fediverse/

'Avatar: Fire and Ash' launches with $345 million worldwide

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” opened with $345 million in worldwide sales, according to studio estimates Sunday, notching the second-best global debut of the year and potentially putting James Cameron on course to set yet more blockbuster records. Sixteen years into the “Avatar” saga, Pandora is still abundant in box-office riches. “Fire and Ash,” the third film in Cameron’s science-fiction franchise, launched with $88 million domestically and $257 million internationally. The only film to open bigger in 2025 was “Zootopia 2.” But there was a tad less fanfare to this “Avatar” film. Sales were notably less than 2022's “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

The problem I have with "Quiet Public" is that it is nearly useless. If I reply to you resetting my reply to Quiet Public it doesn't practically matter. As a) very few people use federated or local timelines and b) the people that follow me will see it anyway.

My point is that assuming 99% of the time people are just viewing their feed, quiet public doesn't really change anything.

Happy to be corrected of course. If I'm wrong, it just goes to show how easy it is to misunderstand this topic.
