I hope both live on. Xmpp has proven it can stand the test of time. But when signal, WhatsApp, etc. stopped using it as a base protocol the usage for sure dropped off. Heck, even when I was younger people used 'jabber' before moving to aim.
But you can't claim that without proof. To say I have 4 active xmpp accounts on my homeserver + another. And 6 or so on matrix. But most don't leave the homeserver. So how can either of those count towards usage of either protocol?
To people that are willing to install an xmpp app, that's my protocol of choice. Easier to maintain as a whole as ejabbered is significnatly more straighftoward than syanpse, apps are usually more straightforward because they're not as feature reach, (conversations 21MB vs Element 100MB on android) but it takes a tech person to appreciate it.
