Dykes Library of Health Sciences ----- Research and Learning Position Title: School of Medicine Librarian Liaison Job Family Group: Professional Staff Job Description Summary: The School of Medicine Librarian Liaison full-time staff position supports the students, faculty, residents, fellows, staff, and clinicians in the University of Kansas Medical Center's School of Medicine (SOM) in their research and learning activities. This position serves as the primary representative and outreach coordinator of library resources and services to the departments, specialties, and support offices within the SOM. The SOM Liaison Librarian reports to the Head of Research and Learning (R&L) and supports the needs of remote and in-person SOM users across the Kansas City, Wichita, and Salina campuses. The SOM Librarian Liaison provides individual research consultations, group instructions and orientations on applicable library resources and services, expert database searching and information retrieval on short term projects and long-term literature reviews, guidance on selecting appropriate publications and outlets for clinical, basic science, and health policy research, and fair use best practices for citations and copyright issues. This position contributes to the University of Kansas Medical Center’s vision for discovery and research excellence by fostering investigation and inquiry, academic rigor, and evidence-based practice. Job Description: Conditions of Employment: Hybrid work modality which includes a combination of on-campus and remote work. Must be able to lift 20 pounds at a time. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, use stepping stools, with or without accommodation, when working in book/journal shelves or transporting office and library materials. Required Qualifications: Education: MLS/MLIS/MIS or equivalent degree from an ALA-Accredited school of library information science. Work Experience: Excellent communication as evidenced by the application materials. Preferred Qualifications: Work Experience: Background in academic or health science/medical librarianship with a strong research service orientation. Expertise in the use and selection of databases such as PubMed, Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, or CINAHL, especially when devising complex search strategies. Teaching experience, including knowledge of innovative teaching styles to encourage classroom interaction, familiarity with lesson planning, and creation and implementation of educational assessment methods. Familiarity with Fair Use provisions in U.S. Copyright Law. Awareness of prominent journals within the medical specialties and sufficient knowledge to guide researchers towards appropriate journals or other systems for dissemination of research, articles, and data. Experience designing and maintaining research guides and content in Springshare LibGuides Experience with utilizing citation management tools, such as EndNote, in research and writing projects. Experience working effectively in diverse learning environments and with diverse populations. Key Roles and Responsibilities: Provides instruction, consultation, and guidance to SOM stakeholders (faculty, students, residents, fellows, clinicians, researchers, and staff) about library resources, health science research, citation management, and scholarly communications. Informs stakeholders about copyright best practices in educational settings and in scholarly publishing, including theses/dissertations. Educates stakeholders about academic publication best practices and assists with investigation of appropriate publishing options. Conducts and co-authors systematic reviews and other literature reviews. Develops LibGuide content related to subject area expertise. Delivers classroom/group embedded instruction and individual consultations in online, hybrid, and in-person settings. Encourages and engages with evidenced based practice (EPB) educational experiences in the SOM across undergraduate and graduate medical education programs. Communicates and collaborates effectively with SOM stakeholders and library staff, including the R&L Librarian Liaisons for the Schools of Nursing and Health Professions. Incorporates knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues and values into outreach, research, and educational practices. Serves on university committees and working groups, as needed. Participates in professional organizations. Willingness to enroll in training opportunities to advance skill sets or participate in professional conferences, as funding allows. Occasionally transports physical materials on-campus for library promotional events. Reviews physical library stack materials relevant to supported subjects and specialties, as needed.
