I have zero faith in Steve Huffman’s ability to lead Reddit.

What kind of chief executive officer posts this comment after a massive community backlash? https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/145bram/addressing_the_community_about_changes_to_our_api/jnk45rr/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3

Addressing the community about changes to our API

>How do you address the concerns of users who feel that Reddit has become increasingly profit-driven and less focused on community...

reddit
He’s continuing to act like a petulant child instead of a business executive

At least Twitch is smart enough to back the hell off when they make mistakes (like they very publicly did this week), not triple down like Reddit.

We might be witnessing the downfall of a pillar of the internet because Steve Huffman couldn’t keep his cool over a nice indie developer who truly loves his platform.

What a dolt.

The main cause is apparently ChatGPT and everyone under the sun scraping all of Reddit’s data.

Why not make an API for true clients vs the firehose?

@matthewcassinelli He acknowledges the 30 day deadline was tight. Understatement of the decade. 🙄
@matthewcassinelli if it costs tens of millions to support 3rd party apps, why is the api so expensive? They wanted 20 million from ONE app, never mind all of the apps.
@matthewcassinelli yeah it's crazy. I bet the destruction of Value is in the billions, if you add up the effect on Reddit's IPO and all the accounts/comments (mine included) being deleted, and all that information lost / pulled from the internet. We'll see if it changes course, but for now it's like the internet said, "oh yeah? fine. burn it all."
@matthewcassinelli Reddit and Twitter. Run by dickheads.
@matthewcassinelli He's such a douchebag
@christyxcore I just keep reminding myself “he’s literally the guy who created Reddit, he’s the original Redditor” so this reply seems to align perfectly with
@matthewcassinelli no, he’s acting exactly like a business executive.
@matthubble @matthewcassinelli no, he’s not. business execs care about their business’ reputation, especially when they’re looking to IPO.
@matthewcassinelli @jsnell Are you saying it’s a paid hit? A major investor once IPO hits wants favors?
@matthewcassinelli What a bummer. Reddit has been such an important community for me over the last decade or so. Despite it all, I'd love to see platforms like Mastodon get more traction as a result.
@matthewcassinelli why does it seem like only petulant children run the most popular sites?
@matthewcassinelli ah yes doubling down against the apollo guy, very sound strategy
@matthewcassinelli that last part is the truest part of the post. they WANT to be able to do business with someone who won't be able to back up their claims against them, so they can say whatever they want.
@matthewcassinelli same. Deleted my account. See ya, Reddit.
@matthewcassinelli @jsnell Looks like Christian is on it already. This is depressing to watch unfold.
@jeromechoo Heh totally, it’s certainly entertaining to watch go down
@matthewcassinelli they haven’t even gone public yet and they’re already acting like it. It’s going to be an interesting ride…..
@matthewcassinelli What's remarkable to me is that there was so much speculation that he would only answer canned questions, or that he would edit comments and all this other stuff -- reasonable considering his past behavior. But the reality seems to be that he didn't have much of a plan going into this "AMA" at all. It's like he thought he could convince the Reddit community that he's right and they're wrong through the sheer force of his personality. Bizarre.
@matthewcassinelli @jsnell I have no idea how Reddit is structured from a corporate perspective, but it sounds like they’ve decided to go public and cash out at any cost. And what a cost it is.
@matthewcassinelli @jsnell really shocking response. Tone deaf. What a baby. Why are all these tech CEO’s such fragile, little babies???
@matthewcassinelli Reminds us of another SM CEO right?!
@matthewcassinelli since you asked, someone who never should have held a CEO position from the start. They have always had issues and spez owns a non-zero amount of those.
@matthewcassinelli Jeez - after reading @christianselig long and detailed post about their interactions with Reddit, these comments by Steve leave such a sour taste in my mouth. Continually burning any trust in the leadership of the platform that I've visited the most over the past 10+ years. Its so sad to see these giant social platforms I've, in a way, called home just crumble due to the ego of one person.
@matthewcassinelli Yeah, somehow I've been on Reddit all these years and never realized what a piece of crap u/spez was until today. Just deleted my 10+ year account. Curious how many users they'll lose over the coming weeks.
@matthewcassinelli I barely know what goes on inside the halls of reddit as a company, I just go there to read stuff or share ideas. *shrug*
@E_Nonymouse @matthewcassinelli It’s the people using and developing 3rd-party Reddit apps (which are far superior to the official apps, especially in terms of privacy) who are being screwed right now. It’s everyone outside the halls of Reddit.
@matthewcassinelli I saw this earlier and immediately deleted my Reddit account. People like that are why we can't have nice things.
@matthewcassinelli Does Reddit have a board of directors? If so they should boot this guy ASAP.
@matthewcassinelli Notice the dude could not answer a simple question from @christianselig in response to his continued libel. Christian literally gives him a chance to redeem himself (again) but Steve chooses to bury himself more deeply in his own shit.

@matthewcassinelli Yeah, when Apollo shuts down on June 30th, I’m out. Time to break free from Reddit, the last corporate-run social media platform I use.

Reddit will go on the scrap heap, along with the facesite, birdsite, and instasite which I have already discarded. I’m DONE with this bullshit.
