Making something out of nothing

I have admittedly taken a softer line on some “AI” gen since our clients use it, and combined with our awareness of how desktop publishing unfolded, and where Medinge Group’s own thinking is heading, in line with our ongoing work into conscious organizations, there is a space for it. You’ve noticed my covering it more

So I bought some Ikea battery-powered led lights for a closet and, um, I recognize that these are *mounting* instructions, but am I supposed to find a clitoris on a closet wall?

Deep economics here.

'The Election Is Not About Who Pays. It's About Why Wages Stopped Working.
'A Keen-Lens analytical brief on the 2026 election economic policies of the Greens and National — and the private credit engine neither party can see.'
'“The immediate cause of unemployment is the unwillingness of entrepreneurs to produce goods when they think they cannot sell them. And this unwillingness arises because workers, having been stripped of income, cannot buy.” — Michał Kalecki, Theory of Economic Dynamics, 1954. Kalecki died in 1970, before New Zealand’s wage share began its long compression — and before two major parties built their 2026 platforms on opposite ends of the same wrong question.'
'Michał Kalecki’s core observation is this: when labour’s share of national income falls relative to capital’s share, consumer spending contracts. Workers spend most of their income. Capital owners save most of theirs. A shift from wages to profits does not just create inequality — it removes purchasing power from the economy. ...
'The Minsky corollary is that when wages compress and workers need to maintain living standards, private credit fills the gap. Not savings — credit. Households borrow against housing equity to sustain consumption. This is not irresponsibility. It is a rational response to income inadequacy in an economy where the asset most households own keeps appreciating. Until it doesn’t.
'...Pay equity is, in its economic structure, a direct wage-share intervention. The workers being paid ... are workers whose wages have been systematically held below market value because their work was classified as low-skill, female-dominated, and therefore cheap. Restoring their wages is not charity. It is a correction of a wage-share distortion that has been depressing consumer demand ....
'A wealth tax and CGT, however well-designed, redistribute existing claims on real assets. They do not directly address the credit cycle...'

And much more

Good on Zack. You don’t want to be like Clegg and become Tory lite. People support Greens for a reason—and that is because they are not the same old crap.

“Green party leader Zack Polanski has given presumptive new Labour leader and PM Andy Burnham an ultimatum over Israel. Polanski, Britain’s only Jewish party leader, has said that Burnham must dump Israel and recognise the Gaza genocide — anything less is a red line”

Polanski says Burnham must dump Israel, and recognise genocide, for Greens' help

Polanski calls Gaza genocide recognition a “moral litmus test” for working with Burnham, citing his refusal to call the genocide by its name

I think the official title is “Doctor of the University”…a lady at the drinks ceremony afterwards said they missed a trick by not saying Doctor of the Universe and I can’t help but agree… University of Glasgow. Thank you a million times over for the honour of joining the fabric of this incredible institution. I got to share the day with absolutely brilliant people, with brilliant minds and stories who do and have done brilliant things in this world, among them being my folks, which was just cherry on the cake. I could write FOREEEEVVVVERRRR about Glasgow. Best city in the world (even though I’m an east coast boy) and some of the best years of my life spent studying there….fun fact…The Doctor studied at Glasgow Uni..as in the actual Doctor is an alumni of University of Glasgow. It's worth reiterating, always worth reiterating:

In this situation, the LLM does not in any sense •understand• why it did what it did, and its response is not in any way an explanation or a window into how it works. Its response is not even based on whatever underlying mechanism made it start responding in a different language. Really, it's not!

Its response is a generic response to being asked “Why did you switch to a different language?,” generated from answers people typically gave to similar questions in the training dataset. That's why it answers with a stereotype about Hindi.

It's roughly the same process as a kid making up an excuse when confronted about some impulsive thing they did. First comes the action, then comes the question, then they look at the question and try to generate a reasonable-sounding response.

Logged into Facebook to check a work thing and this was the highlight, 13 years ago. It was in my old college magazine. So many of those ideas could have worked, fixing inherent problems that mayors ignored. #TheyNeededSomeoneMayoral
