Oscar-winning actress #CharlizeTheron took the stage during Friday's opening ceremony to deliver a message of #peace from the late leader and activist Nelson #Mandela, who hailed from her home country of South Africa.
"Peace is not just the absence of conflict," Theron quoted Mandela as having said. "Peace is the creation of an environment where all can flourish, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, class, caste or any other social markers of difference."
@jonesmurphy The rule of law is crucial for a democracy. It is therefore the first thing, dictators will dismantle, because it's the only thing between them and their ascent to power.
So they attack the rule of law by trying to reshape (or rather warp) the law and ignoring the law were it suits them. The ousting of "inconvenient" judges and replacing the judiciary with political functionaries follows next.
