All right #Mastodon, show this #twitterexodus refugee what you can do.

Walked away from 6700 followers because I won't provide content (not directly, at least) or be in the same space as a destructive & dangerous narcissist. This new (for me) place is cool but I do miss being able to post a special #nature #photograph & know it will get seen thousands of times.

I guess that's my #introduction. I rant about #covid #CovidIsNotOver & #LongCovid & I live in a beautiful place. With a foot of snow.

You really do need to see the full 5 MB JPG of this. I am #CreativeCommons (latest version) licensing it as I do my nature photography on #Flickr (speaking of social media sites in collapse). It's here, on my web site (remember those?) at http://edsuom.com/pics/P1320665-hd.jpg

Go ahead, click the link. I have a VPS with bandwidth to spare. Download away. What's really cool about this? It's a direct HTTP request from my computer to your phone. Nothing in the way. It's just a very SFW JPEG file, free as in #CC.

@edsuom Oh this is wonderful! Thanks for the high res link.

There have been rumors that Flickr may connect to the fediverse somehow. It would be great to have a way to share photos in full high-res quality within Mastodon.

My browser is beeping a lot so something must be happening. Go ahead, I have plenty of #bandwidth to spare on my VPN.

Continuing the #introduction, I've been talking to machines for 40 years. I progammed the web server for http://edsuom.com in #python using the #twisted framework. That was written in part by @glyph who I hope will share this with the other Twisted devs.

I've written 2 books, about leaving my old #fundamentalist #cult , and another about #religion and #evolution.

@edsuom @glyph When I say "my browser is beeping so something must be happening," I'm not trying to be cute. It's literally the only way I could tell from my main account that this was being seen, because that instance has been so backed up lately it barely works. I tried another alt account; logging in doesn't appear to be working there at all.

So now continuing this thread such as it is from yet another alt account that is for #covid but seems best one so far. (Please don't hug it to death.)

@edsuom The part of your #introduction about leaving a #fundamentalist #cult is of interest to me since such things intersect with a few literary projects of mine. Welcome to Mastodonia.

@edsuom @glyph I think it's important to remember it's going to be tough rebuilding your follower count.

Maybe find an instance that revolves around photography? That's a gorgeous picture btw.

@edsuom welcome here, I’m interested in your books. Do you have a link perhaps? @glyph
@edsuom Cult researcher and former Mormon here. Also in Eastern WA but there are no woods near me.
@edsuom @glyph Do you have a link to your book? I am always interested in new evolution books. Evolution is just a fascinating field to study.
@edsuom beautiful! I’m the same. I think twit is now too compromised by bad faith actors. It will take a while to build up a similar following here but let’s try! People like us built twitter and unlike that place no one can buy out mastodon from under us.
@edsuom there’s no algorithm so your follower count makes no difference. Beautiful shot though
@Detr1tu5 @edsuom There is a first-order viral effect, though. (I used to love exploring this geek stuff on #twitter.) When somebody boosts a post as people are doing now (thanks! It's fun to see!), that means the people who follow the one boosting are more likely to see it, by an amount that's inversely proportional to the number of accounts they follow. It feels like the hypergeometric or Poisson probability distribution might be involved but I haven't thought it through.
@edsuom @edsuom conversely it doesn’t get hidden by an algorithm that prioritises other things. Finding the right # on here is the biggest help
@edsuom @Detr1tu5 @edsuom yes that’s what I came here to say too - following well chosen hashtags fills my feed with what I like to see, and using them liberally, but appropriately, spreads posts out across the fediverse to people who want to see them
@edsuom @[email protected]@[email protected] That is far too much math for me – I am a retired math god, emphasis on retired!
@edsuom Welcome! This is a much more polite and welcoming space -- it's really what YOU make it. Yes, it's not perfect, but I'm enjoying being here. I have two accounts -- one for aesthetic and enjoyable subjects, the other for my activist interests. And sometimes, the two intersect!

@edsuom you might find it interesting to experiment with setting up a complimentary https://pixelfed.org/servers account to organize & post your pics.

then you can “follow” that account from your mastodon account & “boost” your PixelFed posts on mastodon & encourage others to “follow” your PixelFed account as well… the two systems federate nicely, so someone can follow an account on a PixelFed service from their mastodon account.

@jeffsonstein @edsuom Love this tip! Would be all over it if I were a photographer! ;)
@edsuom Welcome Ed. I followed you on Twit. It’s calmer here, and lots of people with wicked sense of humor.
@edsuom
Welcome Ed from a fellow bird refugee!
I already love it here. Keep posting those beautiful photos, and I'll keep boosting. In due time...
@edsuom I’ll bite, who doesn’t love awesome nature photographs? Welcome!
@edsuom It's a white end-of-November 👍👍
@edsuom See https://debirdify.pruvisto.org/ for easy method to import Follows and Followers from Twitter (those who have their Mastodon ID/ address in their profiles).
Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@jftypesvrx @edsuom People should likely use these tools on a regular basis to catch people who eventually update their Bird profile to include their Mastodon account. And DON'T FORGET to export the accounts you've blocked and muted on the Bird and do the same with them here. THANKS for the info about this tool!
@adirtyhippie @jftypesvrx @edsuom How do you export blocked accounts?
@rcp_1964 @adirtyhippie @edsuom
See this article. https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/move-from-twitter-to-mastodon
Directions are simple and clear. You can export from Twitter Follows, Followers, Blocked and Muted, into separate CSV files. Then, login to your Mastodon account and navigate to settings (via Preferences, I think), and find import. I imported my Follows and Followers into my Mastodon Following list. You can't create Followers by importing.

@jftypesvrx @adirtyhippie @edsuom Excellent - just bookmarked. Thank you for the info!
@jftypesvrx oooh.... useful! Thank you so much
@rcp_1964 @jftypesvrx @edsuom Debirdify (https://debirdify.pruvisto.org/) has an option to export both your block list as well as a list of accounts you've muted. Export each, then MERGE import them into the appropriate place in Mastodon's settings.

@edsuom @just_alex just lovely. Thank you for that moment of visual peace.
@edsuom How nice that you have a text descriptor of your beautiful photo.

@edsuom Perhaps you’d like to join in #ArtAdventCalendar to share your photos with a wider audience.

@edsuom Welcome to Mastodon! Heading into December, this is a perfect photo to share. ❄️
@edsuom
I was one of your followers and I am glad you are here. It's different, and I miss twitter and the many folks I followed there. But I love it here. Many of them showed up here, which has been great, and I have followed many other folks, so there has been no loss of information. And there is beauty that comes my way via photographs like this, of animals, of art and poetry, and I can barely peel myself away to sleep and go to work. It's good to see you again!
@edsuom
Welcome Ed!! Fascinating bio. Beautiful #trees !!
@edsuom I see your neat nature photo

@edsuom

Yes, we all need to work to convince our followers to follow us to mastodon.

My pitch is that it is a better platform. We will all be thanking Elno in a year for provoking us to do this.

@edsuom
Welcome! South Eastern BC here - so my place looked a lot like this today too!
@edsuom Here on the coast of Maine we haven't more than flurries, but I do appreciate the winter scene. (And as someone with 19K+ followers on Twitter, it's tough not interacting with that many folks, but it reminds me of the early day of Twitter when I was just starting out).
@edsuom Think back to when you started on Twitter with no or just a few followers. You're not quite at that stage, starting on Mastodon, but still closer than you might wish. Good luck building back your follower base, though.
@edsuom welcome! don't worry, mastodon's growing rapidly.
@edsuom a nature photograph is hitting the spot rn
@edsuom Congratulations on doing the inconvenient thing. Twitter helped me develop a personal brand. But my own brand is less important than my principles. I walked away from Twitter on principle and I don’t regret it. I suspect you won’t either. And thank you for the beautiful photo. Welcome!

@edsuom

I'm looking forward to your photos.

Here's one for you from today

@edsuom followed yah! I like art and nature too and covid is def not over yet. I work at home permanently now and I live in a smallish town so ...

@edsuom

Your photographs will get seen but the number of sightings will never be known by you unless your photo is favourited or boosted. We're not here for make viral posts. We're here to share what we have in the hope that someone else's day will be made better for it.

And those of us who have fled from the birdsite are not refugees. We don't refer to ourselves as that because it detracts from the conversations of people who have left in fear of their lives seeking a better life for the future.

I'm a #TwitterQuitter same as you. Welcome to Mastodon.

@edsuom A really easy to use tool for finding the tweeps you followed on the birdsite who have migrated here, and following them here on Mastodon, is https://fedifinder.glitch.me. Read to the bottom of the results about how to export to a CSV file and then merge that CSV here on Mastodon. (I see others have given alternative suggestions as well. These should ease the burden.)
