this is, hands down, my favorite GIF: a baby panda holds on to a knob on a door and then anchors their feet in anticipation of having a little backwards joy ride when their human opens the door to come meet them.

it's the cutest thing because this is what my brother and i would do whenever dad would go out to open the gate to park the car in our carport and then close that gate and the gate in front of the house. we'd hold on tight & he would swing us back & forth.

#pandas, they're like us!

Morning High Five

Many thanks to @wonderwoman78 's tip the other day, I worked with 4.75YO to come up with our Morning High Five:

1. Pee-pee;
2. Change clothes;
3. Brush teeth;
4. Eat breakfast;
5. Get out of door.

Simple, yet it has proven to be very effective. In the morning, 4.75YO, his mother, and I would celebrate the completion of each step and remind each other to focus on the next one. It feels like a team game. As a result, we're able to get out of door on time more often now.

In addition, 4.75YO brought up the need of an Evening High Five the day before yesterday. It's great to have his "buy-in" 😎

Reading Fluent Python (2nd edition, https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/fluent-python-2nd/9781492056348/) by @ramgarlic. It's absolutely one of the best programming language books I've ever read.

For example, just two chapters in, even without heading off to look at the #pandas code, I can now picture df, df.loc and df.iloc as three related objects with different _getItem_ and/or _setitem_ implementations and hence different handling of slices, rather than thinking of them as special pandas features I need to remember.

Don't waste time bending Python to fit patterns you've learned in other languages. Python's simplicity lets you become productive quickly, but often this means you aren't using everything the language … - Selection from Fluent Python, 2nd Edition [Book]

Four days' mountain #hiking with my grownup kids! Joy! ♥️

The kids are making #pizza for the first time in their lives. I love how, when asking me what toppings I want, they're so serious, but also so amused and excited.
These kinds of activities are somewhere in between regular child play, but also actual serious adult activity with real implications in the real world. And they feel it, this gray zone between fun/imagination and the "real" world.
It reminds me of my own feelings when I was in their situation at the same age. Priceless.

So the Mineral of the Year 2024 and Fossil of the Year 2024 vote in Hungary has started. It is one of my favorite things 😄 The campaign tends to get heated between geologists and crystal enthusiasts...

Contenders for MotY:

Zircon
Feldspar
Corundum

Contenders for FotY:

Aptychus
Quercus kubinyii
Woolly mammoth

I know which ones I'm voting for. Curious what you all think 😊
