Update on the growth of #mastodon in the last months. After the big wave of new accounts on Nov 17th, the growth seems steady for the last week at around 50k new accounts/users per day. Only in the last couple of weeks, 1M new accounts were added. At this rhythm, #mastodon will get 1.5M accounts/users per month.
@estebanmoro I found through those already followed and movetodon that about 2000 of my 37000 followers on Twitter had created accounts here, most in the last few days.

@Drdind @estebanmoro so roughly 5% 🧐

this makes me wonder if #mastodon just crossed the threshold of being a mainstream but yet niche player for ethical users like #mozilla #firefox
See: the current firefox #marketshare : https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share

In other words, mastodon will not conquer the world, but will make a decent living in the margins of society

What are your thoughts on this? #mastodonmigration

@estebanmoro How is there not a big spike in response to the mass reinstatement of right wing trolls?
@BlueDot @estebanmoro Probably because most of the people who'd care, like us, already left. There might be some increased trickle but idrk
@Sugarian @BlueDot @estebanmoro that was the final straw for me, and got me to join over here. I do wonder what possible "final straw" people can have left. Many say they will never leave, but never say never....
@estebanmoro I realize this may be very tough due to decentralization, but is there any kind of rough daily/weekly use estimate to know how many are using the accounts as opposed to preparing in case of future need?
@foobarsoft the instances report number of connections or toots, which could be used to get a sense of how many people connect every day
@estebanmoro @foobarsoft I would love to get the number of daily/weekly actives. IMO monthly actives won't tell the full story for a while, the data people need to know now is the extent to which new adoptors stay active on the site. Waiting a month seems like too long to take any sort of useful action.
@objectinspace @estebanmoro I agree. With big changes in sign-ups week to week monthly data would likely blur interesting info.
@foobarsoft @estebanmoro I probably am doing something wrong. I am old. But there doesn’t seem to be all that much interaction. Not many new posts a day. I understand quantity isn’t necessarily quality but it is hard to find a group of like minded people here. Liberal, news junkies, climate protectors, anti book banning, pro Roe. Do we all have not much to say? How about today’s convictions on seditious conspiracy?

@browncarol Many journalists are on the instance journa.host.
Another thing you can do is to go to the journa.host instance local feed page:

https://journa.host/public/local

It will pop up a new window and you can scan the posts and follow people that you are interested in. It's a bit tricky because you will need to cut and paste any addresses from the journa.host window into your # search bar, look up the person and then follow them.

@mastodonmigration Thanks, I will give that a try. I appreciate your help.

Would that work by putting the name of any server you would like to be reading in the first part? Thanks.

I would like to follow some hashtags, but neither the #MastodonApp nor #TuskyApp seem to offer this possibility. How can I do this?
@deno Sorry, no familiarity with the apps. In the browser:
@mastodonmigration apparently not possible in the apps yet. 😞
@deno Try the browser interface. It works very well.
@browncarol @foobarsoft @estebanmoro the trick is to follow hashtags instead of just people. For example I follow ones like #birds #ADHD #histodons which produces more than enough content in my feed.
@cytokine_storm @browncarol @foobarsoft @estebanmoro Also, how does one follow a hashtag?

@Lee_in_Iowa @browncarol @foobarsoft @estebanmoro click on the hashtag and then you click on the little person with a plus sign to follow :)

Histodons are history nerds on Mastodon.

@browncarol @foobarsoft @estebanmoro

I was here about 2 weeks before i finally figured out following hashtags hehe ... i'm old too :D but if you type in a hashtag like based on your interests let's say #news in the search bar... a little icon will come up over top of the center feed (if you're on a pc) with a little + sign... if you click the + then all content related to that will show up in your Home feed and voila pretty soon you won't be able to keep up lol

@foobarsoft @estebanmoro @browncarol I found when I follow some “super boosters” like @tchambers I see lots of great stuff and people I wouldn’t otherwise stumble across. Other way I’ve found people is look thru comments and look at bios of people who made interesting comments.
@foobarsoft @estebanmoro @tchambers @alanmartello True. Was frustrated finding them earlier tonight but so many wonderful people have helped and reached out tonight.
@browncarol @foobarsoft @estebanmoro
You need to follow significantly more people/topics. Especially when you first start to build a base. If you don't like the idea of following from the federated or explore tab there are several user directories such as https://communitywiki.org/trunk
Trunk for the Fediverse

@wythran @foobarsoft @estebanmoro Thank you. I appreciate your help. I didn’t think to follow topics. That other place is different. I am sure that will help.
@browncarol @foobarsoft @estebanmoro probably because not many people have left Twitter. Some are still hoping against all hope that things will get better if they stay and fight. Also, this is a different platform that isn’t addictive. I don’t even get loud notifications when there is a response to my post. Probably a good thing? Time will tell.
The most common thing I see people saying on Twitter is that they "reserved" their name on Mastodon, more than "moved".
@foobarsoft @estebanmoro For real usage more accounts need to migrate from the blue bird. I still cannot get as much information here as I'm getting there.
@estebanmoro seems like after each spike it settles at a higher new baseline.

@estebanmoro mY

My sense is it's either going to slow gradually or, if Elon does finally smash things up completely, soar into the stratosphere. Maybe impossible for fedispace to handle.

Which is why I'm hoping it's a slow lingering death for the birdsite, not a catastrophe.

@jobsboils @estebanmoro or it could be like in the movie Force 10 from Navarone https://youtu.be/xFoBu7P_Kwc

@aswath

Well, that's always possible, too.

@estebanmoro It seems like the network effect increases the rate of growth after spikes.

I’d love see how Mastodon’s organic growth after spike events compares to Twitter’s organic growth in the early days after big event-driven spikes — what was it like before and after Oprah got on it and started talking it up, for example.

@Chris @estebanmoro I remember that day vividly - it was a phase change, from a gas to a liquid.
@estebanmoro remember to tip your server ;)
@olavf @estebanmoro I’ve seen this phrase a few times and it’s just clicked what it means 😂😂
@estebanmoro I think 10 million is the number to watch. I think once we hit that it'll take off, because 10 million people are enough to be paid attention to. Considering we'll probably hit 8 million by the end of this week it could happen by the end of the year.
@Tweetfiction just trying to work out how you get from 5.5 million to 8 million in four days? :)
@ntp Where are you pulling 5.5 from? The number is 7.8 based on the stats I'm seeing.
@Tweetfiction oh...um I was working from this page - https://mastodon.help/instances/en
Mastodon Help - Instances

Mastodon instances

@ntp interesting, I've been going off of @mastodonusercount. I wonder what the difference is?
@Tweetfiction @mastodonusercount that is very weird. Two sets of stats, 3 million apart? Need expert help. Is there a Mastodon equivalent of the bat signal? #mastodonhelp ?
@Tweetfiction @estebanmoro The stream of "big names" establishing accounts on the network gets larger with each passing day. That's a great sign and is helping to speed up the process.
@IrwinFletcher0 Yeh, it's the pop festival thingy...get the right big name and loads more people will come.
