This is more like what I expected the response to #win10eol to be from the rest of the tech world.
This would be dope on my still Win10 Box, but is a bit of a whuh? popping up on this Linux box.
Currently setting up my father's laptop - previously running Win10 - with ArchLinux and Mate Desktop.
Problem wasn't Win10 shutdown in October, but rather that it became too difficult to use to him: with fading visibility, understanding what happens on screen becomes difficult w/ Win10, windows lack border lines, explorer has too many different views and menus, with too little contrast, start menu is ad-blown and does not just list most important apps etc..
Mate desktop is enough Windows-like so I hope he understands it, but comes with so much more simplicity, consistency - but all necessary features, it seems.
I can have proper remote access with ssh to possibly fix things. And I can prevent severe system "damage" by not allowing system wide config changes, I can even dump and backup Mate's configuration, so I can restore it automatically, if it was modified badly.
I feel the Linux community has missed a great opportunity to get the Windows10 users to migrate prior to the EOL next month.
They should have been blanketing the airwaves over the past year with the message that users can keep their current hardware and move to a modern and secure operating system akin to Windows.
Maybe it because of the fragmented ecosystem or that the Linux community is bad at promotion. There are hundreds of millions of Win10 machines that are soon to be obsolete.
The world does not have to be beholden to Microsoft because of inertia.
