#DigitalTransformationFallacy

People retroactively adjusting to accommodate rushed technology introductions.

#DigitalTransformation is an anti-pattern that pervasively festers in our tech industry. A fallacy that builds on other fallacies, such as the idea that "technology means progress". Result is a #technosphere where people must forcibly adapt, and an environment that greatly benefits #hypercapitalism and #BigTech.

The opposite trend focuses on #SocialFirst, evolves a #sociosphere.

2: The Technosphere – Earth’s New, Unruly ‘Kingdom’

(This article is part of a six-post reality-check. Concepts and examples are drawn from “Silent Earth: Adaptations for Life in a Devastated Biosphere.”)

For billions of years, the Earth’s surface was governed by the slow, elegant cycles of the biosphere. But now, a new planetary system has emerged, one of human origin: the technosphere. Coined by geologist Peter Haff, this concept describes the interconnected global network of all our technology—our cities, roads, power grids, and digital networks (Haff 2014). Its physical mass, a staggering 30 trillion tons of concrete, plastic, and metal, now rivals or even exceeds the total mass of all living things on the planet (Zalasiewicz et al. 2017).

This new kingdom has a complex, almost parasitic relationship with its parent. The technosphere depends utterly on the biosphere for energy, raw materials, and waste cycling, yet its very operation disrupts those sustaining systems. Agriculture is a primary example of this hybrid reality, where biological processes are co-opted and amplified by technological intervention, transforming the landscape (Foley et al. 2005).

Now, some propose to use the technosphere to manage the biosphere through geoengineering. These proposals to manipulate Earth’s climate systems carry immense promise and equally immense, uncertain risks (Lawrence et al. 2018).

The emergence of the technosphere as a dominant geological force requires a profound shift in perspective. We are no longer simply a species living within nature; we are the architects and unwitting subjects of a new planetary layer, and we have only just understood its unruly dynamics.

We live in a #technosphere and are being force-fed #DigitalTransformation. See how it destroys the fabric of our #society.

#DelightfulCommons curated lists are inspired by #awesome lists on #Github and I realized they still represent a sterile lab with glaring TL lights and metal glinting everywhere.

In a quest to bring more of the missing #social connecting layers to bridge the gap between tech vs. #people and #humanity, I decided to give things a friendlier makeover.

The objective of Social experience design is to deliver solutions that match 'stakeholder' needs. This includes needs of the people developing the software. #SX has a sustainability-first focus and instead of "FOSS projects" refers to #SOSS initiatives. Sustainable open social systems / software / solution / services. Projects that address the relevant aspect of their #FSDL, the end-to-end Free software development lifecycle.

To add #social layers, beyond #technosphere.

This section used to be called "Maintainers".

Well, what are maintainers in #FreeSoftware realms other than engineers working deep in the belly of the ship in the engine room, among oil and soot? It shouldn't be that way, and we can make #FOSS sustainable once we realize how can all work and cocreate better in grassroots environments.

#Gardening is a great analogy. Projects aren't 'dead' for instance when unmaintained. They may be just 'good enough' or value merely disperses, like in Nature.

Some more draft text of the - thanks to @nlnet support - soon revamped delightful-fediverse-experience curated list, demonstrating how I deliberately step away from strict #TechnicalLanguage.

SocialHub HQ opens this month in Brussels

Finally with nearly half a year of delays and big cost overruns due to the rising prices of building materials the SocialHub Headquarters is nearing completion. A stone’s throw away from the European Commission building, this beating heart of the Fediverse is just as impresssive. Coming months more news on the topic. Rest assured that offline we are just as dedicated to organize ourselves as we do online.

💃🕺 Personal social networking

Social experience is uniquely personal, social networking starts with us. A social web supportive of real people allows us to roam freely, to express ourselves, and be with whom we want to be. From global public square to intimite inter-personal relationships, our fediverse must support whom we actually want to be, in connection with those around us. 💞

💪 People. Be in control and free.

Dodge the dodgy #AI infested corporate #streaming services and zoom out, as on the #fediverse we own the stream. Here are platforms that offer #streaming of #video or #audio in real time or near real time, with live chat and other #social capabilities.

On the fediverse our 💜 #lifestreams meet people and humanity and we engage our favorite fedi crowds. Fedi is where outreach matters.

The free and #commons-based fediverse grows organically, like a beautiful garden. Social web technologies can only emerge and evolve by #CommonsParticipation, crafted by many people with love and the joy of coding, while exploring realms of creation.

Joyful creation is where #fediverse allows us to ✨ social code the social code together.

Open science forms the pillar for mankind to invent a better world, and a society worth living in. Or so it should be, if academia weren’t held captive or willing prisoner to commercial interests. Fediverse opens new grazing grounds for #scientists, #engineers, or anyone for that matter, to uncover new #wisdom and #insights collectively.

If only more #OpenScience tools would add #ActivityPub support to join our #fediverse.

But we have @bonfire Open Science app, and @scifed as early adopters.

🌱 Grow commons. Want to help free #academia from corporate #enshittification?

Note the call for action in the previous post. Delightful #OpenScience is looking for dedicated gardeners (maintainers) who work with such tools themself and thus able to bring the necessary quality and rigour that is required for the #scientific process.

@smallcircles that’s a tough subject! I mean I love being social around the right people and circumstances, yet I also really love a good book and a thunderstorm and some music.

I’ve thought about social networks and how they work and scale for a while now… I’ve wanted to study them and not sure where to see the interactions etc.

@EVDHmn

It is tough, but also fascinating to figure out how all these social dynamics work. Ones personal experience is what counts and matters most. Personal social networks - which btw are just a bit of a visionary topic I muse on, in lack of proper tech support - should stimulate you in pursuing these activities, and be generally helpful to bring more balance between ones work, hobby and life events.

@smallcircles yeah, for now I’m pretty focused on goals, however it’s somewhat at the center of a subject I am studying. Complex systems, cybernetics, complexity. I have been thinking of meta epistemology as well because I would love to see the relations to the relations…

@smallcircles that sounds cool! Thank you so much for the invitation. I may pop on for awhile one night this week. I mostly do my extra curricular in the evenings so I will take a look for sure!

I would love to see the architecture and platforms that are available as options on both iOS and android.. I prefer Creative Commons and open source… so that sounds great.

@smallcircles kinda love the idea of FOSS compost. Using old open-source project code to nurture a new one.
@depereo @smallcircles I also like the idea of continuing to use or to redesign/reuse projects that are no longer actively developed. In my opinion, some of the best FLOSS programs aren't actively maintained. NanoLinux did a great job recycling older FLTK based applications, improving them to get create a FLTK based Linux distro. Would love to see groups pick up where NanoLinux left off.
@depereo @smallcircles Another awesome project is CDetect. I use it all the time in my builds and I've been adding features I need to it. I wish more people knew about it.
