@houba yes, totally. The license is but a small tool in the toolbox. Some actors are repelled by #copyleft, but still we have this open kitchen then, where they learn all the recipes and let #FOSS folks explore the market for them on the cheap.

In a separate branch I mentioned the concept of "commons based" as a way forward, where the #SocialWeb and #PersonalSocialNetworking form the collaboration environments for cocreation..

The chaotic commons is big. How do we foster chaordic organization, so that FOSS projects and initiatives are encouraged to pay attention beyond their direct scope, to dedicate collectively to the health of the ecosystem and key enabling technologies such as #ActivityPub that they rely upon?

Here #HedonicPeerProduction comes in, which can be supported on the #SocialNetwork itself. Different than top-down enforced #community #governance, which only works at small scales, self-interest is basis for participation.

the #SocialWeb is not about the technology, but a cultural change. movements tend to take a long time and lots of willpower to persevere and refuse the corruption of big money. please recognize the different game we're actually playing.

I'm starting to think that decentralization has to be a bit more difficult upfront or the law of defaults means they will all join the same server and never leave, making it theoretical forever.

We have to overcome the onboarding struggle with education, which will have the side effect of helping them understand why this matters too. They will become invested like the rest of us, getting purpose out of being here and helping it flourish.

I know some ActivityPub devs feel jealous of AtProto’s success.

I’ve felt it too.

But really, we shouldn’t.

Every serious step toward decentralization is a win for the open social web.

With tools like Bridgy from @anewsocial, we can stay connected across protocols and keep building a more open future together.

If you really believe in empowering humanity, then this isn’t competition, it’s momentum.

@croyle Yep! We initially fought back but Asians being Asians: "if you have nothing hide" and/or "just create one and don't use it, problem solved". 😅

Meta cornered certain cultures without them doing anything. It's why Meta and Twitter rarely react about the #SocialWeb , they have a solid market elsewhere. The North Americans, Europeans, Australians, can all stop using Meta products and Twitter, they still have a huge market in CJKM + ASEAN + South Asia. The Philippines, India, and Indonesia alone can sustain them.

If the Open Social Web really intend to change the landscape, it should focus on these three countries first, then spread to the mentioned three regions. Social Web movements are too focused on the Western (NA, EU, AU) markets, that's why it's not making a dent on these corps.

Those of us at the grassroots can only do so much. We need coverage, write-ups, events, education, campaigns, and financial support.

This article is #APnative. You can boost, favorite and reply to it directly. You do not need to create another post that links to it. The creator can see everything in one place that they can control forever. All long form writing, podcasts, videos, songs etc should work like this. It is the killer app for the #SocialWeb, something the corporate platforms can never provide. A reason all creators should join us here. We just need reader/player apps that support this work.
