One of my favorite pollinator photos, and the bee isn't even in focus. Which is why I love it. (Bombus sp., Illinois)

These colorful lesions were originally thought to be just fungal infections (Botryosphaeria dothidea) but were eventually found to harbor midge larvae (Asteromyia carbonifera) that farm the fungi for food and use the hardened hyphae to prevent (sometimes) parasitic wasps from ovipositing into the gall. In turn, emerging female flies dutifully transmit spores to new plants each generation. #goldenrod #fly #diptera #fungus #fungi #mutualism #gall #galls #solidago #cecidomyiidae #insects #entomology

#Fleabane #Erigeron #annuus is an #invasive #neophyte in #Europe, originally mative from Canada to Florida (USA). It arrived in Europe and #Asia as an ornamental plant in the 18th century and became naturalized.
C. Wang et al. (2020) studied it in China finding one #alienspecies be able to "generate a #favorable" #speciescommunity #habitat that is beneficial for following ones, using #Solidago #canadensis as 2nd alien.

Bumblebees on goldenrod (Solidago spp.) Goldenrod pollen does not cause an allergic reaction. It is too heavy to become airborne and only leaves the plant on pollinators.

Do you recognize this North American wildflower? It is a keystone species that hosts many lepidopterans in its range. It plays an essential role in the life of a certain gall fly (and the wasps that parasitize it). Of your seasonal allergies, it is not the cause; you can blame Ambrosia spp. for those.

Say hello to the humble goldenrod!
