Rather than an instagram like experience, this feels more like something filling the fediverse niche that flickr fills in the centralised web. It's designed from the ground up for photographers, and makes viewing exif data etc easy (though sadly that doesn't yet integrate well with pixelfed). It also supports HDR images (by allowing people to upload a HDR version and an SDR version), which means HDR doesn't break when federating out to pixelfed etc.
We've spun our own instance up, and unless something terrible goes wrong in the next week or so, I think I'll start to make moves to shut down our pixelfed instance (with plenty of warning) in favour of vernissage.
If you're interested in trying it out, the flagship instance is at https://vernissage.photos/, and the blahaj instance is at https://photos.blahaj.zone. Fair warning though, the blahaj instance isn't even 3 hours old yet, so it doesn't yet have a great deal of content! But that will change as content starts federating in
