We scored the only flat of prairie dropseed that existed at the entire multi-vendor event.

Now we just have to find butterfly milkweed, Asclepias tuberosa. Word on the street is it’s hard to come by given a late frost. Ho-hum.

Third weekend we’re heading out in search of the seven specific and common native plants we need for a garden I’ve wanted to build for months. This will be the 5th place/event in three weeks. The things we put ourselves through…

Wish me luck, I need it!

Today has been…. a lot.

So, here’s our red columbine looking mighty fine.

This plant has been absolutely abused its whole life. Only a few months ago we put it in a deep pot with plenty of room. And wow! It’s back, baby!

ALSO: Holy crap Elderberry is a BEAST. How did so much of it survive? Y’all need to get some and plant it because if our year of hell can’t kill it, I bet you can’t either.

Scarlet Bee Balm (Monarda didyma) isn’t just a flower — it’s a pollinator power plant.

Hummingbirds, native bees, butterflies — all fueled by one vivid red signal fire in midsummer.

If something is not eating your plants, your garden isn’t part of the ecosystem.

It's awesome to see native gardening pick up. Stuff like Homegrown National Park, Shrink the Lawn, Less Lawn More Life etc.

If you have boring turf grass and want to be part of the solution, check out this free webinar hosted by Missouri Department of Conservation Monday Nov 3 at 5 PM (central)

I have been coveting everyone’s New England asters, so last year I uh, rescued* some to see if they’d come back year after year. I’m pleased to announce that yes! I now have New England asters in my pollinator garden.

Saw a baby squirrel for the first time in my life, in our front tree!
(It’s really hard to tell from this photo but this squirrel is TINY, and it was hanging out with mama, who was a smaller breed of squirrel to start with!)
