The sloe ( prunus spinosa) crop is plentiful in southern England in 2025, after a dry spring and hot summer. After the first frosts, some people will harvest these berries to add flavour to Gin to make Sloe-Gin.

At this time of year I am usually picking sloes to make sloe gin. (I have a recipe if anyone is interested). Sloes are the intensely bitter fruits of the blackthorn, prunus spinosa.
This year I have found only one, very well sheltered, blackthorn with any sloes at all (pictured). This is because the very cold, wet spring we had this year meant there were virtually no bees or other pollinators around when the blackthorns were flowering.
