Wild garlic (allium triquetum) Perfect for herb butter or fried with potatoes. I remember this being the first food that was harvested from the household garden plots in Northern #Kyrgyzstan, when I lived there in the early 2000s… delicious and beautiful! 🌱✨ #bloomscrolling #foraging

First wild garlic of the season

Nice haul of wild asparagus today while hiking around. #foraging #hiking

The forage this morning was cold. But the rewards were good.
Saw a fox on the way, big fluffy tail. The light was beautiful. It felt good to be alive!

Time for the yearly PSA about foraging.
Responsible foraging means not decimating an area. You are taking from an eco system. Be kind and considered. Ideally anyone coming behind you should not be able to tell where you have been. Wild garlic has a long season so you can take little and often, but this goes for any foraging!

Regular weekly volunteering sessions have restarted at the urban farm! Afterwards, I went to check in on my allotment bed again. I think the weight and breathability of the AG-30 Agribon frost cover was ideal for my needs, but my support hoops will need redone..the heavy snow was just too much. All of the gai lan and most of the daikon were finally winter-killed, but that's okay, they'll enrich the soil. Three or so daikon are still holding on..I may let them go and hope they manage to give me some seeds to save. The kale looks great and seems completely unbothered by anything but slugs, having put on new growth over the winter. The sage also seems to have grown, even though it has some complaints about being squished. All my garlic is up, and I just hope it had enough of a dormancy period..we'll see! Both rosemary plants survived the winter, though they don't look thrilled about it, and the strawberry plants are also growing. The mache and miner's lettuce that I sowed during the winter hasn't done anything, but perhaps it will now that it's warming up. Either way, I will probably start putting radishes/lettuce/etc. in some of the empty squares soon. In the mean time, a lot of bittercress weeds have popped up, but I'm not mad about it since they're easy to pull and pretty tasty! tastes like spinach with a slight radish edge. I think I'll weed them up to add to a salad.

What #icefishing can teach us about making #foraging decisions
Humans are natural #foragers in even most extreme habitats, digging up tubers in tropics, gathering mushrooms, picking berries, hunting seals in Arctic, and fishing to meet our dietary needs. Human foraging is sufficiently complex scientists believe that meeting so many diverse challenges helped our species develop memory, navigational abilities, social learning skills and similar advanced cognitive functions.

What ice fishing can teach us about making foraging decisions

Social density increases likelihood of sticking with a location. Environmental factors had little influence.

Watching #foraging videos for the relaxing nature walk content but the knowledge hits different now too

On my walk this morning I scoped out that the wild garlic is coming through strong. Think I’ll be getting up early on Saturday/Sunday to start the gentle foraging. Need a long season this year, my jar of dried is almost out!
