Worlds Aids Day
.
In 1987, the
Silence = Death poster was created by a New York-based group of artists to protest the U.S. government's inaction on the AIDS epidemic, which they saw as a result of government and societal silence.

Before I sign off for the night, I want to call attention to this anniversary of an important event in our queer history: The Up Stairs Lounge Massacre. Things to know:

* #OTD in 1973
* 32 lives claimed
* Deadliest fire in New Orleans history
* 20th century's worst anti-gay mass murder

"Resist like it's 1930s Germany"
"Silence = Death"
"Hiatory is Now"
"When Injustice Becomes Law, Resistance Becomes Duty"
I love these women, spotted on Market Street at the Hands Off protest this afternoon. 🙂

December 1st is #WorldAIDSDay

The photo is from the night before my 1st Pride parade. I was 20 years old. Think about that for a minute.
For many of us, our 1st pride weekend also included our 1st AIDS memorial march.
Imagine over than half your dating pool dying.
Imagine newly formed friendships disappearing.
Imagine the government not giving a shit because, in their words, AIDS is "k¡II¡ng all the right people"
And you wonder why we're angry?

The inimitable Themme Fatale on queer histories of community care... #SilenceEqualsDeath

Themme Fatale on Instagram: "I’ve been thinking a lot about queer legacies of care. If we take pride in our history, we owe it to those who built it to also make our future something to be proud of. Gonna get vulnerable for a minute and say that it is a unique kind of hard watching people celebrate the incredible queer histories of AIDS activism, while they simultaneously ignore those around them in their own communities who are disabled and locked out of queer spaces RIGHT NOW by another novel zoonotic immune damaging virus. The best way to celebrate these histories is to honour them. I know you’re sick of hearing about the pandemic, but if you can’t process those feelings enough to take care of other people, then what part of our history are you celebrating exactly? If you want the party without the protest, that ain’t pride. ✨EDIT: in the last slide where it says CD8 it should say CD4. While both CD4 and CD8 cells are dysregulated in both HIV and COVID, it’s CD4 cells that are *depleted*."

@johncormier I’m glad you broke your vow of silence, too. I was diagnosed at 52. Oldest I know of was in their 80’s… #SilenceEqualsDeath #ActuallyAutistic #ADHD #AuDHD @actuallyautistic

Five days after the start of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, ACT UP disrupted the CBS Evening News with chants of "Fight AIDS, Not Arabs, AIDS is News."

When asked by a reporter if disrupting a TV broadcast was "an immature and silly way to get your point across to the country" ACT UP replied, "we think spending hundreds of billions of dollars bombing people in another continent is a silly and immature way to get a point across."

Then ACT UP stormed Grand Central the next day, filling the terminal with protesters and banners saying "Money For AIDS, Not For War" and "One AIDS Death Every 8 Minutes."
