It’s ALIVE!

Well, it was alive before, but now it FEELS alive with a fancy MOTD.

I’ve been moving the individual containers on Fox into proper stacks for Rex. So far, I have a “core” stack with nginx, omada-controller, and wud. Next will be a “media” stack with immich and jellyfin.

New gist: Use codeberg as target for mirrors from your local forgejo

This is how I work with repositories on my own forgejo instance that is not public to share content on codeberg so I can collect issues and pull requests there.

PS I don’t know what’ll be the final design. I’m determined not to give in. All because I need an alternative to Plex due to some other IT muppets making bad choices 10 years ago and the company now looking distinctly shaky. #SelfHost
Why the hate? Because there is no simple, logical path to allow me to share library with a friend. Every option above requires a level of compromise on privacy or security or both. I’ve even pondered just getting my friend a #Unifi Travel router (£80) to allow secure access to my LAN but this feels like yet another workaround that defines IT itself, simply decades of one workaround after another. If HDDs hadn’t gone crazy price I might have just set up a new NAS and mirrored them! #SelfHost 2/2
So in this week I have gone from definitely using a reverse proxy with a sub-domain run by Synology DSM, to definitely using a VPS with WireGuard tunnel connected to my LAN and Caddy running that reverse proxy on the VPS to definitely using Tailscale on my Mac and friend’s Apple TV so they can log into my Jellyfin server occasionally! I hate networking, I loath the engineers who designed, named and brought forth this convoluted, steaming IT Networking turd into this universe. #SelfHost 1/2

I'm at a point where I need to start replacing some drives on a cold-storage box. It's currently a 8TB capacity from two 4 TB drives logically mapped together on Debian. I just use it as a second cold-storage site.

Any feedback on minimum 8 TB spinning platter drives (>=7200 rpm; SATA) that have good long-term performance records? The current drives are probably 8+ years old.
