Because I am a (neurospicy) creature of routine, certain food happens on certain days. In the warmer months, Saturday is sandwich and crisps. In the cooler months, it's soup and sourdough rolls.

Tonight was Hokkaido squash soup with apples and maple syrup. I'm not the biggest fan of squash soups but if you roast the winter squash first, it brings out an amazing depth to the soup.

(For anyone wondering the other days: Tuesday is Mexican/TexMex/NewMex, Thursday is everyone sort themselves out because I did the grocery shopping, Sunday is pizza or leftovers. Sunday is also the day where I check to see if I can pre-prep anything for the week. I have a Mealie instance that integrates into Home Assistant to have the meal plan calendar on the everything else calendar.)

I'm learning helical knitting for the body of my Drip Dye sweater so the two hand dyed colors blend a bit better.

Y'all. Why did no one tell me this before? (Nevermind that I don't go to knitting nights or anything.) I can blend my two skeins and not have that annoying twisted seam?

I tried learning it years ago and it didn't click. For some reason, it did with this tutorial.

How to Knit Helical Stripes

Helical Stripes, or helix knitting, allows you change the colour every round but to avoid a jog you only knit to 3 stitches before the previous colour change, slip those 3 stitches and then pick up the other colour.

My current hyperfocus is getting a journal that works for me sourced and printed out. (I've got a source, no worries on that!)

But my brainmeats are telling me that if I have something that I can easily access (which means I have to clear my desk in a big way) and also have with me (there's a sweet leather binder I have a mighty need for), then I will be able to have the digital calendar for Appointments I Must Not Forget and Dates I Must Remember, but I will have a day by day of what my to-dos are and how I was feeling and whether I'd had a messed up body day... Tracking! Data! Also ... Pretty Ink! Shiny!

I am my own science experiment, this is just for my brain.

(I am also finding that if I have basic things that I don't do as often as I should scheduled, I actually do it. There's stickers. Because it hits the happy brain juice button.)

not, then make somethin' pretty) and remove the tile in the way.

But if that's the plan, then I want to have all the supplies sorted so I can just start it and have everything I need to get it done in one go. There will, of course, be a trip or two to the hardware store because that's how it goes, but not having to completely screw around over and over would be great.

But now I have an oscillating multitool and that's going to be handy for other projects... After I replace the blades that I went through (I didn't catch that I was using the wood/plastic blade so that got crunched. Then when I switched to the metal one, it did its job.)

So I think instead of sitting here seething about my lack of success, I'm going to cut out the pieces for the prototyping for my next dress. Okay, maybe 10 more minutes of seething.

Our rain forecast has evaporated, so now I'm planning out my yard and workshop based activities for next week.

I need to measure and cut out the window screens (I love living in Europe. It's great. I gotta have my window screens, though. I do not love yellowjackets in my house), I need to lay the 320 litres of bark onto the flat area that's been cleared from nettles, and I need to mow the area near the kitchen so I can put up the rotary airer now that it looks like Summer might be upon us.

Sunday, being a no-power-tools day will likely be me gathering and moving tree limbs that I've been collecting since we moved in. (They're being kept for Hügelkultur raised beds that are on the winter build list.)

Today was a kitchen day and it was a pretty successful one.
- Three 500ml jars of pickled carrots (two plain, one dill)
- Three 500ml jars of pickled red onions
- 1.5kg of cherries washed, stemmed, pitted, and in the freezer for summer deliciousness
- 500g of grapes (same)
- washed, pitted, and sliced 750g peaches in the freezer for smoothies
- lettuce washed and prepped for weekday salad lunches
- Asian style marinated cucumber salad for tomorrow lunch

There are some nectarines and more peaches that need to be processed if they're not eaten by the time they're fully ripe.

The best part? I had a friend that was kind enough to body double with me over chat so I didn't get bored with the task and wander off. Get you a friend that understands your neurospiciness.

There's something wonderful and horrible about being technically minded enough to be able to assess whether something is Really Broken or just Kinda Broken.

Wonderful because you can then make the decision on what to do next. Horrible because there's no way to delude yourself into thinking "but maybe if I just turn it off and on again it'll work THIS time."

My OG sewing machine has died. Seven states, four countries, 25+ years. It was probably time. But now I'm on hold until I decide what I get next.

I've been sick with some sinus-lung thing that my husband brought back from his travels (it's not either of the concerning ones going around, just a regular ol' cold). I finally feel good enough to sew on the purple dress some more and... It looks like a dress. It fits. It's coming along, and I'm learning things.

I'm also trying to keep in mind the entire "sucking at something is the start of how you get good at something" maxim. But it's rough!

#sewing #rmt2024

We have had a few days of rain here and I hate rain pants. But I also hate getting wet.

Enter the idea for a rain skirt (or, as I found it was called in the ultralight community - rain kilt). so I'm working out how I'd want to make that work as something that's able to work over all thicknesses of clothing, and then I had the idea of a removable quilted liner for winter.

I love how quickly I've gone from "I'm sewing from a pattern and I'm terrified I'm going to mess it up" to "I have a niche desire and I will make it happen."

#sewing #rmt2024 #plansnotgoals

I ordered the patterns to be printed. I traced the patterns. I cut out the patterns. I cut out the fabric. I cleaned the sewing machines. I tested the tension on scrap fabric.

I had a moment of abject panic that I was about to mess everything all the way up. But I did it anyway.

And now I have a dress that just needs to have sleeves put on, the neck binding done, and the hem done.

I didn't screw it up. I made myself a dress. It's not perfect. There are some changes I'll make to the next one. But it fits, it doesn't look wonky, and I'm really pleased with how it's turned out for the first time making something in 20 years.
