Pessimism is a negative prediction or feeling about the future. Cynicism is to give up on the future. I can understand pessimism, but I don’t excuse cynicism. Cynicism plays into the hands of Trump and his neofascists. They’d like nothing better than for us to give up on the future. Then they’d win everything, effortlessly.

Some time ago, I attended group therapy for a while, and our therapist gave us little tasks to help us see things in a more positive way. One of these tasks was to put a dried bean from one trouser pocket to the other every time something nice happened during the day, and then to take it out again in the evening to remember.
