Heads up to all of the new people to the #fediverse and #mastodon

#hashtags are a big deal here. They help you get reach on a particular topic and help curate your feed.

You can follow them and filter them out! Maybe helpful on days like today.

Howdy, fedi friends. Is there some tool that highlights hashtags that have "made it" and have traction?

As an example, I'm feeling like 2025 is going to be a year in which I focus more attention on plastic awareness and avoidance. I'd like to find that community and add to the conversation.

Hmmmm... What would be a good hashtag to feature a series of toots where I have a scan of a postcard, and provide a modern photo of the same subject? #PostcardsThenAndNow is the best I can come up with.

Wish I could help more but think I tapped out my tech savvy. Let's see if I can summon some #technology gods for you. Good luck.

Everybody toots about how to #getMore #seratonin for #depression. #MuchObliged. But I don't see a lot of related tips for #burningOff #excess #mania.

HASHTAGS: why they are important

As my fedi-feed gets busier, I think back to a week or two ago and all the posts about how important boosting is, and how pointless liking/favouriting is.

I'd just like to say: in my experience now? Bollocks.

My feed is busy enough now that I can't really keep up: boosted posts are a big part of that, to the point I've removed people that are boosting a ton of stuff that's not of interest and only a little that is.

But what IS critical is:

Hashtags.

Being able to follow them is an absolute game-changer.

eg. if you've checked out my profile because I liked your #caturday post, this is why: I can see posts that have been hashtagged, I don't need to follow individual accounts as much, but to give people an acknowledgement that I've read & enjoyed their post, I favourite rather than boost when posts are hashtagged.

Boosting I now save for topics that are universal or that imho NEED more reach. So I'm reversing the recommended practise of massive boosting / few likes.

Obviously this only works when people hashtag! The other benefit of hashtagging is that people can also filter so they don't see anything with that hashtag. It's win-win all round!

One last point: it's much better for usability to hashtag at the end of the post rather than through the post.

Feel free to boost this though, if you think it's info people NEED! 😅
