More than any year in recent history, 2025 saw more seasoned staffers step away from writing duties due to time constraints and life changes. To compensate for the loss of these slackwagoning quitters and shirkers, we added a gaggle of fresh new voices. This made for a bittersweet time around these parts as long-time friends departed and a bunch of untested, unknowns rose through the brutal n00b gauntlet to seize the means of promo production. These greenhorn neophytes have created great havoc at AMG HQ with their terrible taste, inability to follow directions, and steadfast refusal to ignore deathcore.
Weâve been here before, though, and we always straighten out the newbie upstarts. The daily beatings, deprivations, and absence of positive reinforcement will wear them down, and if not, we have plenty of space in the rotpit out back. This is, and will ever be, the AMG modality.
2026 will be an interesting year as the new crew members are shepherded by the olde while everyone is crushed beneath the iron heel of AMG management. Who will make it to 2027? Who will be sold off to Metal Wani for a box of bananas and Gorilla Glue? Place your bets in the official AMG Survival Pool!

Instead, Ascension sees them giving a masterclass in songcraft and atmosphere, showing everyone, everywhere, how itâs done. With Black Sabbath now officially put to rest, Anathema long gone, and whatever the fuck is happening within My Dying Bride these days, somebody has to fly the British Doom flag high and proud, and Paradise Lost have done a bang-up job of doing so.
Personal Highlight oâ the Year: Seeing Acid Bath live. I may or may not have cried during âVenus Blue,â and no, I donât fucking care. 19-Year-Old me was pleased as punch that 48-Year-Old me got to see a legendary band (and one of his personal favorites) come back from tragedy to pay tribute to their fallen bassist and friend, Audie Pitre, by giving it another long-awaited go.

The Spin doesnât take the trouble to make itself easily approachable. Doom, prog, and post influences circle around velvety melodies that sometimes sound like deliberate songs, and sometimes like jazz improvisation. But itâs these very qualities that belie its subtle allure; only with repetition and attention does The Spin shine. Messa gradually reveals rhythmic motifs, instrumental nuances, and rich compositions that enhance my life on so many days. âThe Dress,â especially, is stunning. And though the recordâs loungey whimsy defies metal conventions, each track prizes genuine grit through its top-drawer guitar riffs. With the devotion it demands, no record from 2025 was more rewarding than The Spin.

#1. Moron Police // Pachinko â I was a little nervous when I first read about the length and ambition behind Pachinko, especially in the context of the incredible and very concise A Boat on the Sea. Iâve never been this happy to be this wrong. Nothing in the last decade has overtaken my life as much as Pachinko has, and Iâm listening to it yet again as I write this, and will probably restart it once it finishes. Pachinko has a lot in common with Everything Everywhere All At Once, one of my all-time favorite films, as a treatise on the chaos of life and the importance of friends and family. It treats its philosophy of silliness very seriously, laughing in the face of darkness in such a beautiful and inspiring way; it brightens my life every time I hear it. And it does all that in tribute to a dear friend who was gone too soon and too suddenly, and no other eulogistic album has let me feel like its subjectâs soul touched mine. An astounding monument to friendship on top of an incredibly accomplished hour of music. Pachinko is a miracle.

#1. Abominator // The Fire Brethren â It took me a few years after hearing this Australian duoâs last album, 2015âs Evil Proclaimed, to realize I was wrong about them. Their raw and relentless black-death metal wasnât just good, it was fucking awesome. With their long-awaited sixth album, The Fire Brethren, Abominator has conjured flames that reach higher than ever. As always, the enraged rasps, scorching riffs, and endlessly pummeling rhythms are like plumes of hellfire shot directly into your ear canals. But amidst the bludgeoning is some genuinely great songwriting, with deep-cutting hooks (âThe Templarâs Curse,â âUnderworld Vociferationsâ), flashes of melody (âProgenitors of the Insurrection of Satanâ), thrashy breaks (âSulphur from the Heavensâ), and just enough variety to keep everything hitting as hard as possible. Itâs not for everyone, but for those into Angelcorpse and other music of that sort, The Fire Brethren is the type of album you just canât get enough of.

#1. Grima // Nightside â In each of 2019, 2021, and 2022, Grima released an album and, in each of those years, I listed said album (#5, HM, and #10). But this year, the year in which I have listened to the least metal and, of course, written the least since I started here in 2018, is also the year that Grima got everything dialled in to just what I want from a Grima album. On Nightside, the duo struck the perfect balance between the traditional influences of 2019âs Will of the Primordial and the propulsive, frozen atmosphere of Frostbitten (2022). The combination gives Nightside an almost hypnotic and weirdly tranquil flow, offset by Vilhelmâs rasping vocals, which remain among the best in the BM game. Every time I come back to this record, and the title track in particular, itâs even better than I remember it being, and I always end up spinning three or more times back-to-back. An album that can keep playing that trick deserves its #1 spot in my book.

Thumos // The Trial of Socrates â I recall groggily stumbling upon Thumosâ The Trial of Socrates at work one early morning, and Iâm not sure if Iâve grown attached to it or itâs grown attached to me. It looms in my periphery, routinely interrupting my listening schedule for just one more spin. This gargantuan dive into ancient Greek philosophy and justice is melodically rich, laden with atmosphere, and fiercely intelligent. I love how this album stimulates my curiosity. I pore over The Trial of Socrates like a madman, piecing the puzzle together with feverish glee but never quite feeling finished, because every re-listen yields new shapes, new colors, new ideas. It eggs me on to research various topics on ancient Greek history or philosophy, and even made for an unlikely study partner during my long preparations for the German A1 exam. I always feel smarter by the end of itâhubris, Iâm sure, but The Trial of Socrates genuinely sparks my imagination in ways few albums do. Time to go listen to âThe PhĂŠdoâ for the zillionth time.

#1. Yellow Eyes // Confusion Gate â Yellow Eyes are one of the best black metal bands in the game, and Confusion Gate is their most impressive work to date. It sees the band return to a more traditional atmospheric sound, but with the lessons learned from their explorations of dissonance and ambience. The result is a kaleidoscopic blend of gorgeous melodies, haunting riffs, and a pervasive sense of pathos that only the best art can achieve. Confusion Gate feels like communing with nature from the top of a wintry peak, embodying both impossible grandeur and awesome terror. This is a record that bypasses the analytical reviewerâs brain and just hits me right in the feeling. It offers a unique catharsis in a year where I truly needed it.

#1. Wytch Hazel // V: Lamentations â I know, Iâm surprised too. But the bottom line is that Iâve been listening to V: Lamentations front to back at least once a week since it released on the most American of holidays, July 4th. For Steel, Wytch Hazelâs latest didnât have the same staying power as previous efforts, but Lamentations is the first to truly resonate with me. Though musically consistent with their Wishbone Ash-meets-Eagles style, vocalist Colin Hendra brings a new sense of passion to the record, and the interplay between instruments, vocals, and lyrics hits me like a lightning bolt. Very possibly inspired by the core Christian tenet laid out in Romans 6:23-24,2 Lamentations is a masterful portrayal of what it means to perpetually fail, to know youâll never be good enough, and in the face of a salvation that renders all efforts, deeds, and accomplishments worthless, to keep striving toward the impossible anyway. Even for godless sinners like me, Lamentations is a beautiful reminder that purpose is found in hardship, that the journey is the goal, and that falling down is merely an opportunity to stand up again.

#1. 1914 // Viribus Unitis â I didnât know Viribus Unitis would be my top album of the year the first time I listened to it, but I knew it would list. 1914âs naked emotion and rousing story of a Ukrainian soldierâs survival through World War I, reconciliation with his family, and inescapable return to war remains as gripping and bittersweet now as it did the first time I heard it. Across adrenaline-fueled riffing, oppressive marches, and somber dirges, 1914 never relents on musical or lyrical weight. Though Viribus Unitis was released late in the year, it quickly became the standard I used to appraise albums while going through listing season. 1914 paints war-torn life with savage grace, supplying devastating melody and grueling crawls that elevate the album to such heights that Iâm genuinely moved each time I get to the end. Viribus Unitis is bleak, raw, and human, but for all that, Iâm never deterred from listening. Ultimately, 1914 clutches the threads of hope and weaves an aural tapestry that brings tragedy and triumph to life, cementing Viribus Unitis as my undisputed top album of 2025.

#1: 1914 // Viribus Unitis â Immersion defines great music and art for me. It is almost unfortunate how good 1914 are in this facet of their music. Their ability to transport the listener to the battlefield in all its violence, both carnal and psychological, is stupefying. The utter dehumanizing hatred with â1914 (The Siege of PrzemyĆl),â the ravenous bloodlust of â1917 (The Isonzo Front),â the hellish wails haunting â1918 Pt. 1 (WIA â Wounded in Action):â all portrayed vividly through 1914âs brilliantly caustic and composed musicianship and deeply personal lyricism. When Dmytro Ternushchak bellows âFor three days / The Russians attacked / And accomplished nothing but / 40,000 dead pigsâ [â1914 (The Siege of PrzemyĆl)â], itâs all you need to get into his characterâs violent headspace. When 1914 mournfully sing in Ukrainian âĐŠĐ” ĐŒĐŸŃ Đ·Đ”ĐŒĐ»Ńâ3 [1915 (Easter Battle for the Zwinin Ridge)], you grasp how someone could put their life on the line for kin and country. When our soldier sings âMy little girl reached out to me / But duty callsâ [1919 (The Home Where I Died)]⊠well, shit, your heart just has to break, right? 1914 donât play âhistory metal.â Viribus Unitis is as present and relevant as you can get.

#1. Crippling Alcoholism // Camgirl â Sometimes you listen to music, and you feel like it gets you. Camgirl was exactly that type of album, and it probably doesnât say anything good about me. Ever since Crippling Alcoholismâs latest graced my ears and I shared it with my partner, we have been singing âI fucking hate the way I look, yeah I look like a fat fucking scumbagâ way too often and mumbling âMr. Ran away, ran away from familyâ every chance we get. The album is dripping with the atmosphere of neon-lit back rooms, seedy interactions, and terrible decision-making. It feels like a lens into the lives of those society has left behind, and I canât help but feel a connection. The self-destructive nihilism, drugged-out sex, and abrupt violence that is all too common in those on the margins of life is something I think more and more we can all relate to, and Camgirl is the art that mirrors society back to us. As a result, it is an album that is just as ugly as it is terrifying and beautiful.

Havukruunu // Tavastland â On their Bandcamp page, Havukruunu explain the concept of their fourth LP: âTavastland tells how in 1237 the Tavastians rose in rebellion against the church of Christ and drove the popes naked into the frost to die.â Sounds like the metal album of 2025 to me! But I didnât crown Tavastland for its lyrics that I canât understand. As Dr. A.N. Grier has been exhorting for a decade, Havukruunu stands as a model of Viking black metal consistency, having dropped only very good-to-great albums since 2015. Tavastland isnât a radical improvement over 2020âs Uinuous syömein sota, but itâs an (arguably excellent) improvement nonetheless, making it Havukruunuâs finest work yet. Yes, these fiery Finns forge sounds reminiscent of Bathory and Immortal, but Tavastland seized my attention for its adventurous prog sensibilities. Some of this can be attributed to the return of HĂŒmo, whose bass rattles like the four strings of Geddy Lee. But the prog is deep in the album craft, from the overture-style modulations of opener âKuolematon laulunhenkiâ to the extended guitar wankery of closer âDe miseriis fennorum.â Now if only I can learn Finnish, Iâll be able to appreciate the killer anti-popery narrative while headbanging to my Record oâ 2025.

#1. Buried Realm // The Dormant Darkness â Melodic tech death? Symphonic power metal? Who knows! Much like my 2025 in general, The Dormant Darkness has a bit of everything in one gigantic clusterfuck. The great news is, neither I nor the album crumbled under all that weight. In a year full of odd twists and turns, my list became more varied and unusual than ever. Buried Realm took this variety and gave me everything I like about metal in one dense package: blazing speeds, soaring guitars, majestic vocals, and relentless fury. Itâs also inexplicably well-produced for how many layers there are to deal with. While 2025 was not a particularly star-studded release yearâespecially compared to most of the 2020s so farâit threw plenty of fun curveballs at me, and The Dormant Darkness exemplifies this with its Xothian fusion of metal subgenres in one big Ophidian I blender ov shred. I would also like to request several Christian Ălvestam features on every album, please.

The first time I heard #GhostBath was about 8-9 years ago. Back then I was totally into metalcore, hardcore and djenty stuff (still today but I widened my horizon). So this band was something new and special.
I havenât listened the band for years! In May the new album came out and I canât praise it enough. Such a good record!

Kenstrosityâs Meanest Meanies
Death Whore // Blood Washes Everything Away [May 16th, 2025 â Self-Release]
Hailing from Nancy, France, crust/death newcomers Death Whore unleashed what is surely one of the meanest records of the year so far. A debut capable of humbling some of the better releases by far more seasoned acts, Blood Washes Everything Away is a nonstop cavalcade of stank-face, bone-shattering riffs. From the onset of vicious onslaught âInhaling the Dead,â to the stomp and swerve that is the massive âInfernal Terror Machineâ and âNone Are Forgotten,â to the blistering and evil â12 Worm Wounds,â Death Whore crafted 11 brutally addictive, but smart and lean cuts guaranteed to snap necks. They allow only the sharpest hooks to imbue accessibility to this killer material, but make no sacrifice to the filthy, crust-laden tones and textures determined to pummel and paste (âNoyĂ© dans le sang,â âMotorthroat â79,â âSavage Aesthetic Revengeâ). Throw in a refreshing message criticizing late-stage capitalistic trends, worldwide misappropriation of wealth by the elite class, and the futility of hard work in the modern era for those struggling to meet their basic needs (âYou Owe Me a Livingâ), and youâve got a record after my heart. I can already tell that Iâm going to regret not saving Blood Washes Everything Away from Filter relegation by the time this publishes, but donât let my transgression in this matter stop you from enjoying of deep Death Whore.

West Virginian death thrashers Executionist were not on my radar. First off, I am, historically, very picky when it comes to thrash. It slaps when it slaps and leaves me cold when it doesnât. Lately, though, Iâve been digging the style more and more, and Executionistâs particularly meaty take on Kreator WIOLENCE has my attention thoroughly affixed. With debut LP Sacrament of the Sick, Executionist bring on the riffs, but elevate them with blackened tremolos, rabid barks, and an immense bass tone. Opener proper âEdge of Annihilationâ pulls no punches, but only hints at the quality held beyond. Thereâs an almost At the Gates-like sense of melody here, one which works in tandem with deadly riffs and blackened char instead of as a mere surface-level decoration (âWheels of War,â âDivided We Stand⊠United We Fallâ). While Sacrament of the Sick relies heavily on the long form for its song structures, creating a spot of bloat, thereâs usually something memorable and interesting to keep me invested in the story from beginning to end (âThy Kingdom Come,â âSacrament of the Sickâ). With just a little tightening of the screws, Executionist could easily become the next big name in thrash. Until then, rest easy knowing Sacrament of the Sick is a worthy contender on its own merits.

Ghost Bath // Rose Thorn Necklace [May 9th, 2025 â Nuclear Blast]
DSBM is a genre of necessity tied to a particular mood, and itâs not a happy one. In spiteâor perhaps becauseâof this,1 itâs one I usually enjoy. Ghost Bathâs take on this particular type of misery music has fluctuated between more black metal and more post, and I personally found it never quite stuck. Rose Thorn Necklace, however, has kept me coming back for repeated mope sessions for weeks. Itâs still recognisably Ghost Bath thanks to those same echoing howls that lurch into voiceless high-pitched wails (âWell, I Tried Drowningâ), and a familiarity about the bitter refrains. But synths now play a prominent role in driving melody2 both dreamy (âGrotesque Display,â âThroat Cancerâ) and uncomfortably upbeat (âVodka Butterflyâ), as things swing back in the direction of post-leaning DSBM. Layered strums lace into pessimistic chord swings and scream-resonant atmoblack (title, track, âDandelion Tea,â âStamen and Pistilâ), sometimes recalling Harakiri for the Sky. It manages to be pretty, in that characteristically depressing way, as minor melodies bleed into blackened tantrums (âWell, I Tried Drowningâ) or ride on synths as harrowing screams narrate (âThroat Cancerâ). The snippets of coughing (âDandelion Teaâ), sobbing (âVodka Butterflyâ), and sirens (âThroat Cancerâ) are par for the course, but still very effective, and the ending duo âNeedlesâ and the horriblyâbut brilliantlyânamed âThroat Cancerâ is kind ofâŠgenuinely lovely in a really gross, demoralising sense. Iâm converted.
ClarkKentâs Bestial Beats
Animalize // Verminateur [May 23, 2025 â Dying Victims Productions]
While the album cover might not inspire confidence, make no mistake, Animalize is worthy of your attention. On their sophomore album, Verminateur, these Frenchmen bring youth and energy to the old school speed and traditional metal scene. They mix up mid-tempo tunes with high-octane thrash, and even throw in a lovely piano ballad for good measure (âPriere de Remordsâ). On tracks like âChevel Astralâ and âAu Jugement de Soiâ you can hear influences ranging from Accept to Def Leppard, while the lightning-fast âVerminateurâ sounds like a blast from Judas Priestâs Painkiller. Front man Coyote brings plenty of charm, ranging from excitedly shrill to cool-headed, all while executing some well-timed âoohsâ and infectious laughter here and there. Fortunately, he doesnât carry all of the weight. Jessman and RattleGab keep the riffs spicy throughout, ensuring Animalize never phones it in, while Lynxâs drumming adds some much-needed heft. The songwriting is nice and tight, allowing the album to clock in at a tidy 36 minutes. As good as each song is, the icing on the cake is âEnvahisseurs,â which will end up as a strong candidate for song of the year. It brings a killer riff and thrilling energy thatâs sure to get the Statue of Liberty to drop her torch and make some devil horns.
Owlswaldâs Feathered Echoes
Pandemia // Darkened Devotion [May 16th, 2025 â Hammerheart Records]
After a decade between releases, Czech death metal veterans Pandemia burst back onto the scene with their sixth full-length, Darkened Devotion. Still channeling the menacing souls of legends like Vader and Immolation, Darkened Devotion marks a significant yet successful pivot towards a more accessible sound for Pandemia. Delivering bone-crushingly heavy and succinct songs that are both memorable and easily palatable, Pandemia havenât lost their edgeâtheyâve simply refined it. From âNightmare Paradoxâsâ gut-punching, wicked riffing to âCatalepsyâsâ gratifying, atmospheric thrash-inspired arpeggiations, every part of Darkened Devotion feels focused and tastefully executed. New drummer Jake Bayer (Cutterred Flesh) is an absolute beast, shaping Darkened Devotionâs mammoth backbone with thunderous rapid-fire double bass runs (âBlessed, Blessed Oblivion,â âDepthsâ), intricate tom fills (âThe Pallor of Detest,â âThe Wretched Danceâ) and precision blasts (âNighttime Paradox,â âA Sea to Breathe Inâ). Returning guitarist Alex Marekâlast heard on 2005âs Rivenâunleashes a barrage of infectious shredding that makes headbanging involuntary. Jaroslav âJardaâ Friedrichâs bass and Jikra KrĆĄâs vocals complement Bayer and Marekâs authority with angry drawls and guttural, gravely growls. The albumâs overall tone is immense, effortlessly engulfing listeners into its nocturnal anxieties with ease. With Darkened Devotion, Pandemia have forged a refined and brutal auditory feast that genuinely took me by surprise. Embrace the darkness.
Killjoyâs Dreamy Delights
AsthĂ©nie // Iridescence [May 5th, 2025 â Self-Release]
Iridescence is literally a colorful piece of music. Named after the naturally occurring phenomenon of an object appearing to change colors, AsthĂ©nie assigned a different color to each of these five songs. The guitars are the main focus hereâwhether with a glimmer (âMĂ©lĂšzeâ) or a shimmer (âIndigoâ), they brilliantly showcase the prettier side of post metal. Hardcore-tinged screams boldly accentuate the guitarsâ vibrant hues, providing heft and urgency. Somewhat ironically, âGrisâ (meaning grey) takes up the most time at 11 minutes and is the most developed contrast between the calm and furious. At only 35 minutes in total, Iridescence passes like a beautiful breeze with little fluff or filler. While by no means necessary, some clean vocals could potentially add even more color to a future release. Though this is not the first instance this year of a post-black record patterned after various wavelengths in the visible light spectrum, Iridescence is resplendent in its own right.
Au Clair de Lune // In the Wake of Dusk [May 16th, 2025 â Self-Release]
Moonlight and bodies of water share an intrinsic artistic bond. Thereâs something deeply enchanting about a celestial, ghostly source of illumination amidst a dark, murky setting. Leonard Sinagugliaâs blackgaze project Au Clair de Lune aurally combines these two aesthetics via dreamy, floaty guitars and synths akin to Autumn Nostalgie and, of course, Alcestâs Ăcailles de Lune. At times, the melodies are smooth and glassy like the surface of a lake (âEchoing Silhouettes,â âNeon Duskâ). Other times, theyâre upbeat and catchy as a rip current (âAnaemoia,â âDistant Glowâ). The principal vocal style is a mild rasp, more for flavor than heaviness, though Falyriae adds her airy singing voice on occasion. Although the track order and overall pacing usually find a good balance between the atmospheric parts and the punchy parts, the longer track lengths make In the Wake of Dusk feel a bit fluffy in places. But even so, Au Clair de Lune provides a satisfying and transportative experience to an unearthly realm.
Dolphin Whispererâs Dusky Deposition
Slumbering Sun // Starmony [May 9th, 2025 â Self Release]
Music is the closest thing we have to magic in this world. When a great song or a great album graces your ears, itâs a clean sweep to any combo the head, heart, and gyrating body. Such was the case with Lone Star Doomsters Slumbering Sun and their debut release The Ever-Living Fire back in 2023. With a fragile heart in one hand and a fat riff in the other, their take on the kind of sadboi doom youâd hear in bands like Warning or early Pallbearer struck me deep. On Starmony, much of the same elements return: growling bass underpinning stadium-sized riffs, Ozzy-like vocals that bustle with a modern emotion and charisma, and a posty playfulness that allows long-form compositions to swell and soar. The only trouble is that it takes a couple songs for Starmony to settle into that same form of riffed-out hypnosis, with the one-two intro of âTogether Foreverâ and âKeep It a Secretâ sounding like the middle drive of a live set rather than the start of an introspective journey. But with the violin-assisted weeping catharsis of âMidsommar Nightâs Dreamâ and âWanderlust,â the waltzing melody of âDanse Macabre,â and the Thin Lizzy-styled dueling leads of âThe Tower,â Slumbering Sun again finds a monstrous groove in hopeful and hammering songcraft. And, of course, if you get a chance to catch this act live like I did, just a few days before The Dolphlet emerged, youâll fall extra prey to the kinds of doomy incantations that Slumbering Sun conjures with their mystic-minded compositions. In fat riffs we trust, and in sorrowful hearts we linger.
Tymeâs Tragic Tones
EnterrĂ© Vivant // æȘçœȘ (AkuzaĂŻ) [May 26th, 2025 â Antiq]
Comprised of French multi-instrumentalist Erroiak and vocalist Sakrifissâwhose 25-year residency in Japan heavily influences the musicâdepressive black metallers EnterrĂ© Vivantâs3 third album, AkuzaĂŻ, blew me away. My DSBM bar was set long ago by Shiningâs unfuckwithable V: Halmstad, and yet AkuzaĂŻ has come along to give it a run for its money. Centered around 10 Buddhist sins, AkuzaĂŻ relates the experiences of Japanese civilians and victims during the Second World War. From the emotionally charged cover photo depicting a mother breastfeeding her newborn shortly after the bombing of Nagasaki,4 to the haunting interludes and shimmering, melancholic melodies within, AkuzaĂŻ melds traditional, tremolo-picked guitars and icy vocals ala Summoning and Emperor (âSesshĂŽ,â âShinâiâ) with Moonsorrow-esque keys, Japanese-influenced flutes and violins, along with ghostly moaning howls to create its depressive atmospheres. Transitioning from the twisted croaks of interlude âWaraguchi,â album highlight âJainâ begins with mournful pianos and a pensive, tremolo-picked lead before crashing forth in waves of crushingly cascading chords and Sakrifissâ tortured screams, its eight and a half minutes awash in black metal sadness. By the time the wails of a suffering child floated in around the seven-and-a-half-minute mark, my arms had broken out in goosebumps, and my heart was fucking broken. Offering yet another lens through which to view the torturous horrors of war, AkuzaĂŻ is harrowing, relentless, and not to be missed.
