In the midst of a global uprising against police brutality and systemic racism, No Visible Trauma examines a deeply troubled police department and reveals the devastating consequences of unchecked police brutality. Despite its relatively low crime rates, recent years have seen the Calgary Police Service shoot and kill more people than officers in any other Canadian city, and more than either the New York or Chicago police departments in 2018. Five years in the making, the film unravels the intertwined stories of three individuals who were the victims of extreme violence at the hands of police officers. From the kidnapping and beating of a young immigrant from Ghana, to the fatal shooting of an unarmed man during a “wellness check”, the film exposes a criminal justice system that fails to hold police officers accountable for their actions.

We deserve municipal, provincial/state, federal governments who don't keep increasing police budgets - using our public tax dollars. All those budget increases have never helped to reduce crimes nor increased public safety. The Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP - #CRCC says that the RCMP was unreasonable in setting up broad #ExclusionZones and checkpoints while enforcing a civil #injunction covering the #FairyCreek area in #BritishColumbia, home to #OldGrowth #forests and a #protest led by people trying to save them.
“In its review, the CRCC found that the broad exclusion zones and checkpoints used by members of the RCMP’s Community-Industry Response Group #CIRG were unreasonable,” said the report released on Wednesday. “The review determined that the RCMP’s demand to search the complainant at a checkpoint on a public road was unfounded, and his arrest, after refusing to agree to the search, was groundless.”
C-IRG is a low-profile RCMP group tasked with responding to protests and other public order events about resource based #industrial projects like #logging and #pipeline construction.

The notion of #police being there to #ServeAndProtect in times of need often does not apply to #Indigenous, #Black or other #RacializedMinorities in #Canada. The notion of “help” more often resembles harm.
This leads to the question, why does #PoliceBrutality against Indigenous and Black people continue to happen? Because it is a symptom of the structural #racism that exists within #Canadian society.
