Prioritising life over cars

VisionZero - Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death

"Helsinki, like Oslo and Stockholm, have all but eliminated traffic fatalities. Lower road speeds, automated cameras, and clever city design all helped; but it’s the over-arching vision that made it all possible. More than half of Helsinki’s streets have a speed limit of 30 km/h (approximately 20 mph). Smarter street design also played a key role. Pedestrian and cycling infrastructure was prioritized for upgrades in recent years. More and more people started using public transit or bikes, or just walking."

Can Australia cut road deaths to zero by 2050? Current trends say no. What’s going wrong?

Nice morning for a #FakeCommute, shame about the #CarDominance though. It’d definitely be #NicerWithoutCars. No, I can’t go another way as there’s nowhere else to cross the railway line.

The automobile has a strong use case for groups of people being disabled or endangered in city life.
Most people have no need and some are mentally not able to drive automobiles responsibly, especially in the city.
The evidence for this is pertinent, but the industry does not care about human needs!

BC Hydro (then called the BC Electric Railway ) knew car dominance would ruin our cities in the 1920s.

Living in a #15minuteCity "My son is 13... this #urbanDesign [means #independence for everyone] -- he will ride home by himself, dropped his school bag and then took himself to the orthodontist, which is another minute behind that building... & opposite there he could go to his doctor, all within a 5 minute cycle of his house."

I also love her point that to prevent #carDominance, simply do not build #InducedDemand for cars.

Citing safety concerns, ODOT will close 181 Portland area crosswalks this year

53 of them are in Portland. ODOT plans to close 16 crosswalks on Southeast Powell Blvd alone.

I'm so jealous of #Paris' battle in taking its city back from #CarDominance. I really wish #Berlin would get a senate that shared that sentiment.

A #Berlin with a lot less cars would be amazing and would make the city so much nicer to live in.

Today's rumination on #CarDominance: the barbarity of putting pedestrian crosswalks at street intersections. Intersections are the most dangerous parts of the streetscape. Drivers are most likely to be careless or make mistakes there. The only reason we also put crosswalks there is so drivers don't have to stop for each other at an intersection and then stop again mid-block for people not in a car. Instead we make it illegal and call it jaywalking.
