โWhen mayors in other cities ask me how #Copenhagen afforded to invest in its cycling networks, I ask them how on earth they have been able to afford highway projects. We invested in bike lanes because that was the cheapest option.โ What the world can learn from Copenhagenโs cycling revolution. https://theprogressplaybook.com/2024/01/31/what-the-world-can-learn-from-copenhagens-cycling-revolution/
Pretty incredible.

ca the 1930's the pedestrian space was already claimed, even if there where not so many cars yet. Space for cyclists and trams
Roelof Hartplein.
Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat crossing the Overtoom in 1956. Redesigned for cars, pedestrians or bicycles hardly get any space any more.
In the middle ages the overtoom was a pilgrims path to the Rokin, now it takes cars into and out of the city.
A single car doesn't have to be an issue. There is a difference between made for cars and having a few cars around (for for instance care needs).
This is the crossing of Bilderdijkstraat and De Clercqstraat in 1903. So much space in comparison with now.
Frederik Hendrikstraat in 1910. Before cars... soo much better. can we have wide streets again with space to play?
โฆand all the silly news stories that focus on gas prices. The real focus should be on the insane costs of car centricity.
Everything from purchase price (inflated by protective tariffs), car infrastructure (public & household), inefficient land use, pollution, public health costs, etc.
Why the focus isnโt on affordable mobility options instead of gas price.
Grrr!
