Car dependency, bad urban design, and public transit sharing space with cars means we can't even do the trolley problem right, anymore.

Most of the problems people have with snow are really problems with car dependency. Driving is already dangerous on a good day, and even more dangerous on a snowy road.

Eliminate the need to drive, and you eliminate the danger. Walkability and rail transit are the answer.

How extreme car dependency is driving Americans to unhappiness

A car is often essential in the US but while owning a vehicle is better than not for life satisfaction, a study has found, having to drive too much sends happiness plummeting

@tk also they are ugly af, have no #PublicTransport and are so #CarDependent that the Cities go bankrupt on them...

Heat, cold, pollution, noise and insects: too many apartment blocks aren’t up to the challenge

"Research shows how apartment residents struggle with the impacts of unhealthy homes. It’s a result of decades of urban planning based on fossil fuel use and high-rise building standards poorly adapted to the Australian environment."

"Our study involved residents of apartments in Liverpool CBD in New South Wales. They are exposed to particulate pollution from heavy truck movements tied to the Moorebank freight terminal, smoke from increasingly severe bushfires and a rising number of days of extreme heat each year."

"Buildings that are bad for health and sleep. This sort of housing is bad for residents’ health and wellbeing. It will also add to energy poverty for decades to come. Residents’ experiences reflect low building standards in Australia. Wanted: better regulations and development models."

Heat, cold, pollution, noise and insects: too many apartment blocks aren't up to the challenge

Apartment residents need more sustainable, climate-adapted designs. They shouldn’t have to depend on costly, high-emissions air conditioning to remain comfortable and healthy.

#buses as #bicycleinfrastructure. Buses with high bicycle capacity driving routes that facilitate #cycling longer distances. Bus-assisted-cycling can cover large areas with minimal fixed infrastructure or cost in general. Could this be a solution to #cardependent low #density areas?

@mikemc303 @Techaltar It would be possible in the span of a few months to solve both the housing crisis and the need for so much commute if the will was there (there's so much empty pre-flattened land to go around).

The science of building & setting up #PanelBlocks is fairly mature by now.

Yes that means #CarDependent suburbs would need to be abandoned, they were never going to be sustainable.

(#Streetcar / #tram suburbs can work somewhat.)

@screwtape @pkw @brokenix Fair point, there may be no amount that can make such change due to a categorical incapacity.

UBI with no public healthcare doesn't make sense. Much like UBI with private cars and #CarDependent #urbanism makes no sense.

Providing basic decency for everyone precludes mandating worse for everyone (and so collectively being worse off).
