#SSUnitedStates, the largest #OceanLiner ever built in the United States and the fastest liner ever built, was christened & launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1951. Retired in 1969, it languished for decades and will soon be sunk off Florida as the world's largest #ArtificialReef.

@mjalhassan @green-planet-mjalhassan There are so much better solutions to create artificial reefs, than sinking old ships. For the money that needs to be spent to prepare the ship, purpose built 3D printed reefs, can be created that are specifically designed for the local environment and species and built with local resources. The effectiveness of these solutions is way higher! For example see: https://www.coastruction.com

SS United States begins journey to become world's largest artificial reef

The historic, aging ocean liner that a Florida county plans to turn into the worldโ€™s largest artificial reef has departed from south Philadelphiaโ€™s Delaware River waterfront. The SS United States is a 1,000-foot vessel that shattered the transatlantic speed record on its maiden voyage in 1952. It left the waterfront on Wednesday afternoon. It will be towed to Mobile, Alabama, for planned prep work before officials eventually sink it off Floridaโ€™s Gulf Coast. The move comes months after the conservancy that oversees the ship and its landlord resolved a years-old rent dispute.
