Grave captaining errors caused the #OceanLiner #SSUtopia, an immigrant carrier built in 1874, to strike the ram of the warship #HMSAnson near #Gibraltar on #ThisDayInHistory in 1891. It sank within 20 minutes, killing 562 of 880 aboard, having failed to launch lifeboats in time.
The P&O Line #OceanLiner #SSMaloja struck a German submarine-laid mine off the Dover coast on #ThisDayInHistory in 1916. Canadian collier Empress of Fort William tried to rescue its passengers but it, too, struck a mine — both ships sank. Over 155 were lost, many to hypothermia.
#HMHSBritannic was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1914. Meant to serve as #RMSBritannic on the North Atlantic #OceanLiner service, and built as a larger, safer sister ship to #RMSTitanic & #RMSOlympic, she worked instead as a hospital ship until sunk by a mine in the Aegean.
The gorgeous #RMSAquitania sadly arrived in Scotland for scrapping on #ThisDayInHistory in 1950. With one of the longest careers of any #OceanLiner, #Aquitania served in both World Wars as a troopship, and was the last surviving four-funnelled liner when she was retired in 1949.
Built with turbines instead of her sister #RMSCaronia's expansion engines, #RMSCarmania was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1905. Carmania served as an armed merchant cruiser in #WWI, and sank another converted #OceanLiner, the German #CapTrafalgar, in 1914's #BattleOfTrindade.
The very first #Cunard #OceanLiner, #RMSBritannia, was launched in Scotland on #ThisDayInHistory in 1840. A far more conservative design than #Brunel's steamships, she was wooden-hulled and paddle-driven with room for 115 passengers, and crossed the Atlantic in 12 days, 10 hours.
A #BlueRiband winner in 1876, the #WhiteStarLine #OceanLiner #SSBritannic was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1874. Her single-screw propulsion was augmented with auxiliary sails in a four-masted barque configuration and her career on the #NorthAtlantic was nearly 30 years long.
The #OceanLiner #RMSLucania was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1893. Identical to her running-mate #RMSCampania, the #Cunard liner shared a distinction of being the largest afloat, and took the #BlueRibard speed record from her sister on her second voyage, holding it 'til 1898.
