Sailrite

Another great used Sailrite slipped through my fingers. We still don’t know where it will fit but I have a few ideas. I want to learn to sew more than anything. I have plans and ideas. Kim-Chi thinks I’m nuts when I mention all black and tan 2 tone on deck. Blue is smart and boring, I don’t want boring. Amica doesn’t want boring. Kim-Chi doesn’t want boring. Coco doesn’t care, as long as there are treats, and there are always treats.

Somewhere across the sea, in a tiny boatyard in the middle of nowhere is where we are headed. Starting October 1st we are retired for a year. A year to move slowly and deliberately. A year to refresh all the little systems on Amica. We are well on our way, nothing special, no more than I did on Sookie. She just needs a good going through.

In the meantime, Ive been hitting the buy now button often enough to get my accountant’s attention. A fistful of reference books have arrived, many that went with Sookie, others that are new to the touch. We are still searching for a working sextant. We don’t need one but the boat does. I just found an amazing leadline weight for Kimmi. She likes the process of doing things, anything that matters. Amica will be our classroom for the sewing machine. Winter will be our captive. Soft, warm, white light and classical music will mentor us through the long dark nights. A nip of bourbon will warm the soul and keep good company with a well earned cigar.

I’m impatiently waiting for cloth swatches to arrive in the mail. All the blue water cruising books are being replaced with this and that which is more appropriate for her current journey. One book remains lost in the mail, it’s long out of print and past due. We will have to be patient. Like Captain Leah always taught me, the most dangerous thing on a sailboat is a clock. The 4 months between now and then doesn’t seem like enough time to get everything we need but it will all come together. Today I’m focused on my dink and whether or not I’m going to paint it. Burnt orange is at the top of my list. A close second is installing a new heating system before winter. Wood? Propane? Deisel? Kerosene? I have the last new brass Taylors heater on earth. It’s a work of art but still sits in its box for a reason. I keep thinking I want wood, but why? In less than a month, the days start to shrink. Winter is coming in fast but we arent worried, you can’t rush these things.

My father once told me that “Rich people don’t take financial advice from poor people.” I think about these words as I stare at my calendar with almost 500 consecutive days off. You can’t buy time…

[ Fajro en la Ĉielo ]

Vespere ruĝa kaj matene griza, sendas la vojaĝanton sur ilian vojon.

Sed vespere griza kaj matene ruĝa, alportas la precipitaĵo sur ilian kapon.

Childhood winters

A random slide from the early 90’s, taken at 660 Westminster street in Allentown. (Some of you may recall the big pink house with the pool?)
