I was poisoned by #tetracycline in the 1960s when I was a kid. TBH, I don't know if I was poisoned if my #Mom took it while #pregnant with me, or if it was given to me after I was born. Regardless, I've spent my entire life with #rotten, #ugly, #brown #teeth (even my baby teeth!) because the #medicine stripped the #enamel off them. 😢

I hope this means that no child will ever have to endure what I have.

Breakthrough gel can regenerate tooth enamel within weeks

An innovative gel that forms a layer over teeth and then recruits calcium and phosphate ions from saliva to build new enamel has the potential to change dental treatment. To date, we don't have any way to regenerate the tough outer layer of enamel on our teeth as it erodes with age.

Why tetracycline should not be taken with antacids, milk and iron?

Milk and other dairy products, antacids containing polyvalent cations, and various iron salts form complexes with tetracycline derivatives, making them insoluble and poorly absorbable. This interaction can reduce the absorption of tetracyclines by 50 to 90%, or even more.

Overcoming Antibiotic Resistance to Tetracycline in Staphylococcus aureus by Gold and Silver Nanoparticles - Cytology and Genetics

Abstract The use of tetracyclines in medicine, veterinary medicine, and stock raising has led to the spread of bacterial resistance to tetracycline, particularly among dangerous representatives of Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, the analysis of resistance to tetracycline and the creation of approaches to overcome it are extremely relevant. Studies of 64 clinical isolates of S. aureus, which were characterized by moderate biofilm formation, showed that 33 of them contained plasmid DNA. A significant spread (in 96% of studied isolates) of the known transmissible tetracycline resistance genes tet(K) and tet(M) was shown in the examined plasmid-containing doxycycline-resistant clinical isolates of S. aureus. Plasmid-containing doxycycline-resistant clinical isolates with tet(K) and tet(M) genes lost resistance to the tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline after treatment of their cells with gold nanoparticles of 30 nm in a concentration of 3.2–9.6 μg/mL or medium-sized silver of 30 nm in a concentration of 20–40 μg/mL. Elimination of tet genes responsible for acquired resistance was confirmed by PCR.

New Mechanism for More Precise Gene Therapy Control

Gene therapies have the potential to revolutionize modern medicine, but they come with challenges such as the therapeutic window problem. A US-based research team has designed a mechanism that could contribute to creating more effective and safer gene therapies. This mechanism involves a 'switch' capable of regulating the action of genes involved in therapy, addressing the therapeutic window issue associated with some therapies. The problem lies in the inability to control how genes in our body encode these proteins. By using the body's own RNA as a regulation mechanism, researchers can avoid an immune response. A stop signal (polyA) is placed at the beginning of the RNA code, keeping it inactive by default. To activate the switch, a 'key' is needed, in this case, a tetracycline, a protein approved by the FDA for activating this 'switch'. This mechanism allows for precise control over gene therapy dosage, making it as easy to control as administering a tetracycline dose. This strategy enables more precise control over the genetic expression of therapeutic proteins, adjusting production according to disease stages and patient needs, all while using an FDA-approved tetracycline dose.

Tetracycline-modifying enzyme SmTetX from Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia codes for a tetracycline-modifying FAD-dependent monooxygenase that shares an overall fold with the tetracycline destructase TetX and possesses a unique active site within this enzyme family.

More concerns about #GE mosquitoes -- especially since they can breed when exposed to #tetracycline

Science snipes at #Oxitec transgenic-mosquito trial

Nature Biotechnology volume 29, pages 9–10 (2011)

"#Oxitec's plans for transgenic #mosquito trials have not been without controversy in the past. They have been criticized by environmental groups, such as Ottawa-based #ETCGroup and #EcoNexus of Oxford, concerned about the risks of releasing an entirely new strain of organism into the environment".

So, yeah, some concerns about #Oxitec #GE #GM #mosquitoes were brushed off as "conspiracy theories" (of course the whole Zika connection was one), but it turns out that some of the concerns were real. To summarize, GE mosquitoes, allegedly bred to be sterile, become not-so-sterile when exposed to #Tetracycline -- a common antibiotic used in cattle, companion animals, and humans!

Following Review of Available Data and Public Comments, EPA Expands and Extends Testing of Genetically Engineered Mosquitoes to Reduce Mosquito Populations
For Release: March 7, 2022

"To ensure that no OX5034 female mosquito offspring survive, EPA has taken the precaution of restricting release of OX5034 mosquitos within 500 meters of potential sources of tetracyclines, as there is a remote chance that environmental sources of tetracycline could have enough tetracycline present to act as a counter agent to the OX5034 female mosquito-lethal trait. Releases must not occur within 500 meters from the outer perimeter of 1) wastewater treatment facilities; 2) commercial citrus, apple, pear, nectarine, and peach crops; and 3) commercial cattle, poultry, and pig livestock facilities. The 500-meter distance creates a conservative buffer zone between OX5034 release points and potential environmental tetracycline sources."
"Oxitec must monitor for OX5034 female mosquitoes within 100 meters of those potential environmental tetracycline sources."
